Is anyone here still autocrossing?

I’m thinking of getting back into it. I went on a group drive this weekend with some Porsche people. It reminded me of the good old days. I’d forgotten how fun it is to run with a group.

I still do. But I don't actively compete in a series -- I go to hang out with people I enjoy, and to see if I can get better throughout the day. My Miata is "old school" and isn't prepped properly to be competitive in our local club. My M2 is a essentially stock, and falls into a good class to compete. But I'm not willing to invest in Hoosiers . . .

Autocrossing can be exciting or frustrating. I don't worry about my times and that always makes my day rewarding.

Yep. Been auto crossing since the 1970s. I have 150 Autocrosses or so on just my 911. I did a track day at Hallett just yesterday. The most fun one can have in a car with their clothes on.

Not in the last 3 months but... yes. AX and track days are a big piece of my joy. Most tracks are heading into the too-hot-to-run months around here but my next planned adventure will be Laguna Seca in August. There are a couple of AX venues that may open up again on the central CA coast and they are great in summer.

Gave it up years ago when I got my track license. It was fun, but the allure to spend money and race on the big tracks was a draw I couldn't shake. I think I would find it boring now, but that's just me.

Go find an early Miata. Put on a set of summer performance tires, and go have fun. You will not likely ever be as fast as the modern cars, but on many tracks you will rarely use your brakes. Just drive it to the track, and drive it home.

Since I own a 85 911 I took it to the track yesterday. Drive up, have fun, drive home. Leave your ego at home, and let the faster cars pass. Most cars on the track had over double my HP. Just 5 cars on track at a time so sometimes it was like a private track day with no other cars in sight.

Same here - once I did a couple of big track days, the thought of standing around in the hot sun all day for 4 1/2 minutes of track time just seems ridiculous now.

Was doing it with PCA for several years as I lived within 15 minutes of the venue. Then they had to move the venue to the far side of town, then moved it again even further so it's now a 2 hour drive.

I do the the equivalent here in the UK, Autosolo. Very tight tracks , area in which track is must not be more than 40000 sq yards and even that is difficult to find venues for in this little country. I often drive 100 miles each way to events. Road legal cars only, must be driven to the event.MX5s are very popular, as are front drive hot hatches, and believe it or not well driven second generation Nissan Micras in the under 1400cc class are justbabout unbeatable. Limit of 60 yards between at least right angle bends. Most are first gear, some are 2nd gear( my car does 80mph in 2nd but I have never been faster than 65mph on an Autosolo).Young entrants to Motorsport and older drivers retired from more expensive forms of motorsport such as Sprinting, which is usually onevlap of race circuit against the clock and is everything from F1 engined single seaters, 600+bhp Evos, very light motorcycle engined kitcars, to under 1400cc hatchbacks in various classes( hillclimbs the same but up closed hill courses where speeds of over 130mph achieved by the F1 engined cars.

After vintage racing and wheel to wheel racing I have had a hard time autocrossing. Went once just to shake the car down and the down time was a killer.

Nearest event is 70 miles away.

There is another 110 miles away.

So, no, I am not about driving 70 miles and spending 10 hours of my day racing for 7 minutes.

I got into track days years ago, I took a hiatus due to the tanked economy, now that things are much better I may start looking into DE's at a track 30 minutes from my house.

I took my youngest son to that track to do a BMW Street Survival school, I wandered over to the race track to watch a NASA event going on. I am thinking I need to get back into this, I miss it greatly.

Waitlisted and no hope of getting on the actual list... I guess everybody was aching to go (first event of the season due to Covid) and registered at exactly the time registration opened. I stupidly waited an hour.

Also there's a 50 car limit...

I try to go 5 times a year at least.

Did it for a few years back in the early 90’s. Had a good time and was F stock champ one year with my Mustang. Then after spending 8 hour days for 5 minutes of fun, we went to Solo 1 with the SCCA. Better, but a lot of down time again.

Then we got into DE’s with my 930, followed by open track days. That’s where it’s at. Spend the weekend with your friends, meet new friends and go fast.

Before every session, it was said go fast, brake late and don’t **** up.

I signed up to a July 19 event only an hour drive away even though I don't like the tight venue with kerbs, as the other choices with wide open venues were at least nearly 3 hours drive away.Staying overnight isn't an option at present as hotels are still closed.Only 32 competitors maximum, vice 50 usually

. Paperless events are now possible because someone in the UK has launched an app to facilitate this, thereby facilitating the running of events with social distancing and no common handling of paper etc. Drivers have to Marshall between runs or be excluded from the event, so red flags and radios must be handled using gloves.

I still do them occasionally. It's just so easy. Check tire pressure, grab your helmet and lawn chair, go autocross.
