2 weeks ago we had 20" of rain over a 5 day span.

Today I was out in the pool and looked up, the sky was tan. Not as bad as you are getting it but we can see it here too.

Last Tuesday we ran down US1 to grab some Texmex. We have to cross a large bridge. Back and forth we went. Wednesday morning we wake to find the bridge was closed early in the morning. Someone sitting at an outdoor restaurant below it saw a chunk of concrete fall off it.

They called the police bridge was inspected and closed down. We have a span on a 25 year old bridge failing.

We had to detour for the rest of the week, what was a 10 minute drive turned into a 40 minute drive to the next bridge over the river.

Fun times. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fc957c279d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f7b0defc4c.jpg

In the decade I lived in Texas I went through a couple of hundred year floods, I think they have had a few since I left. We are talking about a hundred year flood happening 4(FOUR) times in like 20 years. I think there is some sort of space time continuum problem that affects Texas somehow, either that or my idea of what "100 year flood" means is way off.

I would worry too about the Californians. I know a couple families that went.

There have been three since 2015...

2017 Harvey

This photo is literally my neighborhood. Picture taken by drone and went national.

This is not in the 100 or 500 year floodplain.

One of the Blue ones had a Space X logo on the side. I suspect it spent some time in KSC.

How much has development changed the historical flood plains? A lot of it...

Plus global wetting :D

Tobra 06-28-2020 05:50 AM

Okay 5 times they had a hundred year flood, in the last 20 years

Mebbe it will average out over the next 10 million years ;)?

edit: Development on the NC coast is just temporary housing....

Oh, and to answer the question in the thread title, it's going to be mosquitos, and probably frogs too, but they'll come later. The mosquitos will come almost right away.

"hundred year flood" is a term of art based on the way things were decades ago

but the climate has changed so big floods are more frequent now

also, there is more development and more "channeling" of stormwater runoff (ditching and/or lining canals with concrete) - the latter helps some areas, but move lots of water quickly to other areas further down, so they flood more often and with higher levels

Hey, this asteroid missed you on June 5th. Perhaps the next one though. It was not seen until June 7th.

Honestly, one of the Profs at Texas A&M calculated the issues on development. It was about 0.4% additional. The issue has been a series of blocking high pressure systems with a low spinning and dumping water. This has been common since Texas was founded.

Basically, they under estimated the flood zones.

What is it with Houston and strip clubs? I was always impressed by the number and apparent size of the exotic dancer establishments in Houston.

Impervious cover, revealed.

Don't forget the Cuban Brown anole lizard invasion. The little suckers are everywhere and apparently they're too fast for cats to catch.
