oh boy. that time again.

my dog clearly thinks i am pack leader. he goes to me for safety and reassurance. last night, the folks got started early. my dog was freaking out. bombs going off overhead.

my wife is a nurse and is so tired, so i headed off to the couch with my favorite two pillows and a sleeping bag to allow her a full nights rest. he would lay down next to me and whine. i had to keep a foot or hand on him. what a wuss!!

the night of the fourth, i am giving him some pills the vet gave us for "1-hour before" vet visits. i am gonna get him high.

today is a two coffee day for sure. is your dog scared of fireworks? mine would be the worst wilderness dog. i cant imagine gunfire.

Same problem here with an Aussie/Golden mix. Poor thing is TERRIFIED of loud noises.

We live 1.6 miles from an amusement park as the crow flies, or the sound travels. We don't ever hear the general noise of the place. In the summer, they have fireworks shows fairly regularly. If the wind is blowing the right direction we can hear the booms fairly well. It is weird that wind direction can affect the sound levels that much, but is sure seems to.

We also live withing a mile of a local private university. The have fireworks on special occasions, and often on 4th of July. I guess our dogs grew up with thunder and the fireworks and out female long hair dachshund it oblivious to them. Our male dachshund will get a little nervous if there is loud thunder or several of the canon like reports that most of the shows have. Those are just a bright white explosion, not colors and just a loud boom. The dogs don't freak out, but the male will want to get in a lap.

My dogs, a Great Pyr and a Blue Tick, are both scared of thunder and fireworks. I got some tranquilizers to give them on Saturday evening.

Luckily, so luckily my foster dog doesn’t care about either thunder or fireworks. I do my best not to be startled by either of them when they hit hard and act like nothing has happened.

I’ve watched dogs with storm anxiety and it is heartbreaking.

Doesn't bother our dog (Wheaten Terrier), but I take him to work starting as a puppy. Nailguns, compressors, generators no problem.

But he goes nuts with high speed motors, like vacuum, quadcopter, servos, etc.

I know this is too late for a grown dog, but I would recommend for everyone that gets a pup or adolescent dog to do noise sensitivity training. NOBODY seems to do this as part of puppy socializing. I do this for all my dogs, even the non-hunting dogs, but it definitely is the first step in gun sensitivity training for every pup.

When you have a pup, bang around the dishes when you feed him. Make a lot of noise around the dog when playing. Clap your hands loudly to call him. Upgrade your noises to louder as you feed him or play with him. Bang books together, pop bags etc. Then when outside, throw a ball etc. and as the dogs running after it, you can make even louder noises and even introduce gun shot or fireworks. Once you reach a satisfactory level, make sure you keep up a base level of training, repeating all the steps above on a regular basis.

My dogs are not afraid of gun shots, fireworks, balloons popping, doors slamming etc. but still sensitive to traffic and other hazards.

Our Rottweiler loved fireworks! He played center fielder for every roman candle, smothered the fire crackers, ate the sparklers, and watched the big ones go into the sky, which is where is now.

Our Boston Terrier doesn't like them at all. The same with thunder. We got him a "thunder shirt" and it seems to help. We'll see on the 4th.

BTW why do people (my neighbor for instance) that really need to be spending their money on things like dental work, soap and haircuts spend their money on fireworks?

I know someone with an autistic kid and fireworks are about the only thing he really likes. His mother spends a lot of dough on fireworks.

The strange thing is one of the Border terriers loves guns and looking for rabbits. But fireworks frighten him. It doesn't make sense.

I got some stuff from the vet's but they may/must have got the decimal place in the dosage wrong and it nearly killed him So I'm guessing it will just be a lot of lost sleep for me trying to settle dog in his time of need.

Yeah uh be very careful with that.
Once saw a video of some east european guys throwing M80s and their GSD went and retrieved it.
It was not pretty.

my wife has a soft spot of older rescue dogs. i dont see a puppy in my future ever. we kinda get what we get and deal with the PP's level of training.

last night i dragged his dog bed to my side of the bed and it was WAY better. he laid down and slept despite the mild mortar shelling my home was under.

tomorrow night is gonna be epic if last night was any indication. people bought some contraband, over the top stuff!!
