I will note that it is rare that people point to the mask wearers who get infected. OTOH when a person who openly shuns the mask-life gets the China virus, the mask-lifers have a GD party, celebrating "karma." Such bad karma on the partiers part. |

FWIW: A N95 mask with a port will allow droplets to escape. A cloth mask that doesn't seal around the face tightly, as in the masks that are being recommended for public use, will allow droplets to escape. In close quarters I'd rather have both people wearing a mask to reduce the spread. |
Exactly. If she had the virus (while immuno-suppressed) she would be done quickly.
Just the changing of masks in a hospital setting is risky. Then outftting her with what I expect was a cheapy surgery mask that VENTS OUT THE SIDES both in and out did her no favors (to put it mildly) But again, hospitals are fishing for new customers. |

If someone is at high risk, an N95 makes perfect sense, also staying home and avoiding other people like the Chinese plague. If they *must go out in public, just slip a cloth or surgical mask over the N95 and you are golden. This protects yourself and others. It's not rocket science. At this point the anti-mask folk don't want to hear data or see visualizations. It's all about emotion and they feel like they are being mask-raped when asked to wear one in enclosed public spaces. I especially liked the the little lady who refused to wear a mask, refused to leave Costco, laid down on the ground and had a 2 yr old temper tantrum while berating the employees. Classy! It's still a free country so if you are emotionally challenged by wearing one, you are free to go without. Either stay home or avoid crowds and enclosed public spaces. A retail store is also free to refuse entry to those who choose to exercise their freedom not to wear a mask. "No shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service." Freedom is awesome and it works both ways. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/X0YQG4zn3xs" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I know but we really are a country of morons. Though if you think about it, maybe masks don't work at all. Just look at the explosion of cases in FL, AZ and TX. Clearly masks don't work.

Only in a country of morons would you keep seeing that ignorant pic over & over.
The naked virus particle is of little concern. The goal is to stop droplets and micro-droplets. Masks protect the wearer AND others. See the research article I posted above. |

Where I live, masks use spotty at best. Gas stations, 7-11's auto parts stores, bars, very limited compliance among customers and staff. In advance auto the other day, few wearing anything. Many wear mask under nose/ etc. Numbers here beginning to climb. I'm amazed they aren't climbing higher.
Complete lack of hand hygiene at all locations. One store- people prepare food without mask or gloves- even w/o covid. wth?!? Watched medical staff in adjacent building across parking lot eat lunch at picnic table today. No masks. No social distancing. No breeze. Crammed like sardines. "We're friends, so no danger here." Forget covid, I was scared the picnic table was going to collapse b/c of all the people on it. In higher end stores, compliance goes up. In fancier grocery stores- about 80%?, but I'm not really seeing staff enforce anything. Since they aren't enforcing anything, they aren't differentiating between masks with exhaust valves vs. no exhaust valves. I see a lot of fancy stylish non n-95 masks with exhaust valves. At breweries, people get chatty. No masks. People I see with n95- about 50/50 exhaust vs no exhaust valve. Hospitals enforce the exhaust valves. Here's what happens when a store employee attempts to enforce mask useage- Sorry for the FB link- here's your moment of mask enforcing zen. This was a local case. The upset individual had a history of temperamental issues, but still, a headache. Probably why a lot of stores just "let it go." https://www.facebook.com/adrienne.hamlyn/videos/2814348062007285/UzpfSTE2MTE2OTM4MDIyMjY4MDQ6MzMxOTE0MjI4NDgxNTI3Mg/?__tn__=kC-R&eid=ARBGksAekCilV0L_9lu5fRQbh8Ppdmcxez0F0SIK8W2S AqzjJR9kY_KtAcHWmm_HABpIEJtCfzVneGEo&hc_ref=ART-NGVpD76eE9fv2SWy9GP5VQBx2LtrW2TZifCxAaKjo-mfUgKnSi2HNLb75nye_M8&fref=nf&__xts__[0]=68.ARDOfRBrmltAFCyQViuRTRN-oh_yt8a7CdhgMa9nGhCpub1arI1NapSAEIPAadmd4pxFnZLGuU 3wUdQ-qvPcrTw4h4q-U6wtsrqk-FHWoizLnTQm7gDxEKj9lDlFfmSZ64QsVQSL096IsfJuK-WSf35nQXthbspMx6k_UzSgsKiPfoIMbgvxxMHC1t19kDu2ybwE H8ByRVBIkDkZ5FFJ4NZ7gUAZhF6MqYfm0izVs6xkXRNiiOzhI4 oJirOI5emhL0IPA2oQiPTnLZQFKYZ5feUZ4NfTsAkPcYvYUzg6 BIwVU_RsNU-aMCEQvNTJ17Dh-_MyBFihlCmjxxE1loVeOSsFN9gwQm96R8qCZQ |

"anti-mask folk" " don't want to hear data or see visualizations. So the mask-conformists rant about how those "anti-mask folk" are "morons." Look, all masks are not created the same. Yet the mask-conformists DEMAND that "masks work!" . . .without specificity. That makes the claim "masks work!" either equivocation, at best, or emotional stupidity at worst. |
Once again, gear matters.

had to look it up. |
I remember when ebola was raging in Congo and a couple other places in Africa and infectious disease specialists from all over the world were flying into those countries to try to treat sick people and stem the tide of infections. Many of the local people, being ignorant and uneducated plus superstitious and susceptible to conspiracy theories, believed rumors that the health experts were actually bringing the virus into their country to kill them, so they attacked the doctors and nurses w machetes and killed several of them.
I will admit to looking down slightly on a society of people so superstitious and susceptible to completely unfounded rumors that also completely distrusted legitimate medical and public health advice. It all seemed unfathomable to me as a resident of a modern, advanced western country. I no longer feel that way. The "anti-mask" and "reopen" movements are peopled by Americans every bit as stupid and paranoid as those Africans. I feel like I owe them an apology for ever thinking that Americans were so much more advanced and well informed. I'm seriously gob-smacked by my country right now. The Florida of the world. |

Yeah it's the same out here. In the big lib cities it's required (mayor mandated). Small townships i.e. where I live. The only place that requires it is a national chain dollar store. LOL! |

We are being herded into compliance like good little sheep, while the governor (Aussie dog) nips at our heels, and the farmer (big government) looks on with a pleased look on his face.

Come on Island, give us a mask-rape tantrum. You know you want to...

This thread is pretty funny.
Can someone answer a simple question? How is this virus different from all the other viruses that have come before? In the past, we protected the vulnerable, isolated the infected and kept the rest of society going. What is changed? |

Ok, get ready to duck.. here comes the machete... again... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1594783017.jpg Quite simply put, it is foolish to state/demand that "masks work!" as a solution to this virus/pandemic. Saying such a thing equivocates on the effectiveness of said masks. (as if there are no differences in mask effectiveness... a mask is a mask - not true) Now if one wants to put a qualifier on "masks work!"... say; masks work to keep me from picking my nose and licking door-knobs... then great, you say that. But, even as the 2 quoted above say, even hospital grade PPE doesn't ensure the wearer will be containment free. Anyway, referring to people, who make distinctions and understand the relative effectiveness of PPE, as machete swinging, anti-maskers, raped by masks  simply outs your emotional stupor. |

Come clean Island. Surely you are just yanking our chain and don't actually believe the scheit you post.
**Countries who acted quickly, had consistent leadership working together, demonstrated universal acceptance of social distancing and masks in public: Taiwan- 451 total cases, 7 deaths (0.3/M) Hong Kong- 1500 cases, 9 deaths (1/M) Singapore- 46,000 cases, 27 deaths (5/M) S. Korea- 13,000 cases, 289 deaths (6/M) Finland- 7200 cases, zero deaths (0/M) Japan- 22,000 cases, 982 deaths (8/M) There are many others but these were exposed roughly at the same time as the US. In the US we had mixed messages from federal, state, local, and CDC leadership, we were poorly prepared with PPE, and testing had a rough start. Lots of civil disobedience regarding social distancing from both the hard Left protesters and the hard Right, and mask wearing became a political punching bag. USA- 3.5M cases, 139,000 dead (421/M, 1600/M in NY), and a widespread current surge. The results speak for themselves. Universal acceptance of social distancing and masks in public are not the only solution or even the best solution, but a big piece of the solution in the battle against a virus that we still know very little about. An absence of teamwork and consistent leadership is the best way to get your azz kicked and we are the poster child for this right now. We in this country have accomplished some pretty amazing things when we pulled together including the entry into WWII and the moon landing in 69. I expect 2020 will go down in history as a time we were too busy bickering and name calling to come together and attack the problem as a nation. An opportunity missed. |
In the USA the government can't force people to stay home or threaten them with large fines or imprisonment if they don't obey the order to stay at home.
Most of those countries with "universal acceptance" accepted it because if they didn't there would be universal fines or imprisonment. |

You mean like Hong Kong? I guess you will need to be more precise Cab:
"In Hong Kong, which has sharply reduced new infections over the last two months, residents have adopted near universal mask use on their own. The move was in defiance of a government that banned face coverings last year amid protests over Chinese rule, and initially denied that masks were needed to quash the coronavirus." I generally hate the LA Times for their opinews, but this is actual journalism for once. https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-06-17/social-distancing-remains-as-asia-eases-covid-19-lockdowns |
