The limiting factor in many places will be trained doctors and nurses with Covid experience.

Masks!

Shut Downs!

I'm still not seeing how Sweden is "not looking so good." Relatively speaking.

BTW, really compelling stuff here The Price of Panic

Sweden seems to be the only country that did not panic.

group911@aol.co 11-07-2020 04:02 AM

"Swedish authorities have, throughout the pandemic, said they don't think strict laws and fines would be effective in Sweden. Early on, this strategy was at least partly based on hopes the country could build up a 'herd immunity', emails between officials suggest, and this is something that hasn't happened."
" Firstly, there are legal difficulties to imposing a full lockdown in Sweden, a country without a framework for a legal state of emergency in peacetime.

This has frequently been cited as a reason Sweden has instead relied on recommendations, but the country does have the possibility to go further within existing laws.

During spring, the government was granted faster decision-making powers which meant it could impose measures like ordering closure of schools, shops, restaurants or other businesses, either regionally or nationally, without having to go through parliament.
This temporary law expired in July without ever being used, but is an example of how Sweden does have the possibility to introduce stricter measures than those currently used."

The country did not ignore the threat entirely. Although stores and restaurants remained open, many Swedes stayed home, at rates similar to their European neighbors, surveys and mobile phone data suggest.

, The country has seen roughly 590 deaths per million—on par with 591 per million in the United States and 600 in Italy, but many times the 50 per million in Norway, 108 in Denmark, and 113 in Germany.

Stockholm’s nursing homes ended up losing 7% of their 14,000 residents to the virus. The vast majority were not taken to hospitals.

One measure of COVID-19’s impact, excess mortality, was far higher in Sweden than in neighboring countries and Germany,

The government limited gatherings to a maximum of 500 people,

Upper secondary schools and universities went online.

Indirect data suggest children in Sweden were infected far more often than their Finnish counterparts.

Sweden’s summer traditions may have helped: Hundreds of thousands leave cities and towns for remote cabins in what amounts to 3 months of national social distancing.

Sweden is the new China

The Swedish COVID-19 Response Is a Disaster.

the infection rate of those teaching in classrooms was 60% higher than those teaching online—

compared to Finland, ....Sweden had seven times as many children per capita treated in the ICU during that time period.

Sweden and the U.S.
highest overall mortality rates that failed to rapidly reduce those numbers as the pandemic progressed.

Sweden has often had among the lowest test rates in Europe.

As of mid-August, herd immunity was still “nowhere in sight,”
, herd immunity to an infectious disease has never been achieved without a vaccine.

Hospital system is a disaster
Only 13% of the elderly residents who died with COVID-19 during the spring received hospital care,
Many were reportedly denied care
Those with special needs could not receive oxygen or hospitalization
More than 100 people reported they were not allowed to come to hospital.
Her husband Cristian brought her to an unnamed hospital in Stockholm, but were told it was full and sent home, where Lucero’s health deteriorated

State-mandated stay-at-home orders and public mask mandates coupled with case investigations with contact tracing contributed to an 82% reduction in COVID-19 incidence, 88% reduction in hospitalizations, and 100% reduction in mortality in Delaware during late April–June.

The Danish RCT

https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-6817

Effectiveness of Adding a Mask Recommendation to Other Public Health Measures to Prevent SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Danish Mask Wearers
A Randomized Controlled Trial

A total of 3030 participants were randomly assigned to the recommendation to wear masks, and 2994 were assigned to control; 4862 completed the study. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 occurred in 42 participants recommended masks (1.8%) and 53 control participants (2.1%). The between-group difference was −0.3 percentage point (95% CI, −1.2 to 0.4 percentage point; P = 0.38) (odds ratio, 0.82 [CI, 0.54 to 1.23]; P = 0.33). Multiple imputation accounting for loss to follow-up yielded similar results.

Although the difference observed was not statistically significant, the 95% CIs are compatible with a 46% reduction to a 23% increase in infection.

Geez, pmax, just jab a hot poker in sugarwoods eye why doncha? :D

Do you even read what is being said?

Limitation:
Inconclusive results, missing data, variable adherence, patient-reported findings on home tests, no blinding, and no assessment of whether masks could decrease disease transmission from mask wearers to others.

The findings, however, should not be used to conclude that a recommendation for everyone to wear masks in the community would not be effective in reducing SARS-CoV-2 infections, because the trial did not test the role of masks in source control of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

island911 11-18-2020 03:11 PM

I posted those same limitations in the PARF thread.

pmax has it right -the difference observed was not statistically significant,

You do like the boilerplate disclaimer there.

Essentially saying, "just because we found no efficacy doesn't mean that there is no efficacy - don't sue us"

Sooner or later 11-18-2020 04:17 PM

You are doing exactly what the authors of the trial say not to do.

Since Sweden's honor at stake here ...

Well, we do now and they're right yet again.

https://nypost.com/2020/08/19/swedens-tegnell-wearing-face-masks-may-be-very-dangerous/

“It is very dangerous to believe face masks would change the game when it comes to COVID-19,” said Tengell ...

Tegnell has argued that evidence about the effectiveness of face mask use was “astonishingly weak.”

I’m surprised that we don’t have more or better studies showing what effect masks actually have,” he told the UK Times.

Sooner or later 11-18-2020 04:32 PM

He also said..

11/17
On Tuesday, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said Swedes appear to be paying less attention to social distancing guidelines now than when the pandemic first erupted. That’s despite warnings from Lofven that Sweden faces a “really dark” winter with the virus.

“We can see how many people are working from home,” Tegnell told reporters in Stockholm. “It’s not as high as it was during spring.”

“The prime minister is definitely right in saying we need to do more,” Tegnell said. He also acknowledged there are potential legal barriers to imposing further restrictions. “It’s a legally very difficult area that we’d get into then,” he said.

Those studies are being suppressed. It's the new "science" to hide conclusions that don't agree with dogma.

Corona is but a fart compared to the toxic effects of islamization of our country. THERE we did it wrong and keep doing it wrong.

And sadly / ironically, it would appear that the latter has contributed significantly to the former.

Cajundaddy 11-18-2020 09:53 PM

I expect it will be a long covid winter and for the US, South America, most of Europe, and India, the beatings will continue. Still too soon to decide whether Sweden gambled and lost, or played the game well.

The big winners right now are Taiwan, S. Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and New Zealand. What did they do right?
