Question Is this a copperhead snake?

Had a triangular shaped head and was hanging in the branches of a bush near our garage door. Probably about 2 feet long.

It seems to match descriptions but the color is way off from the pics I see.

I have heard of some that are grey-ish rather than the usual copper color but I've never seen one.

Seeing the head would help. Next time grab it by the neck and tell it to "say cheese!"

I don't know enough to tell you, especially without seeing the head.

But this (sorry for the huge pic) is a pic of a momma and babies

< edit: surprisingly the formatting to make the image seem smaller works on the board >

The head was shaped like the grey babies in the pic. Maybe it wasn't a fully mature one?

Copperheads aren't very long. 3' max.

The hourglass pattern will be wider on the side. They have the flat head. They have slit eyes, not round.

Here's a great pic that shows the difference between the heads of most venomous snakes vs non-venomous.
Poisonous snake has a head that's much wider than the body (neck) behind the head.
Non-venomous snake, the head and body are nearly the same size.

Not for at least 1/4 mile. I looked at pics of water snakes but didn't see the triangular head like the one on our recently departed friend in my pic. Here's the pic of a water snake I found online

Maybe a rat snake?

Do you have the head. It makes it infinitely easier to determine with the head. Does it have round eyes or slit eyes. Is the head far larger than the body immediately behind the head.

Well, I knew to look for the shape of the head but no. I crushed it to prevent a reflex biting response and dumped it. What you see in the pic is about half the snake. Next time, I'll take a selfie with it before I kill it.

The dead give away is the tail. If it has a rattle or no rattle. Even baby rattle snakes have a rattle. The king snake or whatever else look alike will even shake their tail as if it had a rattle, but that's just to scare you away.

Well, the good news is that there are probably others around and you can make a better determination next time...

A couple weeks ago my dachshund has barking and raising hell in the back yard. Bark, bark , BARK....grrrrr, grrrrrr, GRRRRRR.

I finally got up and went outside to see what has happening. She had a 4' bull snake by the tail and had turned it into a bull whip. It was mangled by the time I got it away from her. She didn't want to give up her hard earned prize.
