Presumably, it's the extremities that get hit the worst, hence hands and feet.

I wonder. There have always been some obese folks, but there definitely seems to be more now. Is it due to body positivity or (more likely IMO) due to our eating habits, crap food, plus eating all day, plus most prepared foods and drinks being full of sugar.

Ever wonder why Chick Fil A is so popular? Sugar, their chicken is like candy.
How about Starbucks and their syrup drinks that have a little coffee flavor?

The body positive movement tells overweight people that it's okay to be overweight. It tells people it's more important to feel good in your skin. I don't agree with fat shaming as it does no good, but telling a person who is clearly overweight that they should feel good in the skin they're in isn't a helpful message either.

On a side note, do kids even do the President's physical fitness test like they used to?

I have always had the luxury of having a fast metabolism, so in 55 years, the heaviest I have ever been was when I was retaining fluids from a heart issue at about 196#. Today, I am ta 5'10" 184# and active on the farm, but not necessarily exercising. I eat alot of small meals, and eat slowly.

I havev noticed that some of my bigger friends eat like it is a competition (downing a whole sandwich in 5 bites, and less than a minute, while NOT in a hurry to finish). The fast eaters tend to outrun their "full" mechanism, and eat far more than they should.

I think it started with the burger joint war adverts from the 60's. Honeycomb, Cap'n Crunch, Rice a Roni adverts, et cetera. Carbs and lots of refined sugar. It sells and is attractive.

You can eat like a sow now, any meal for $4. Maybe $6 with a jumbo diet coke because you are being careful. Inexpensive to eat poorly.

"Diet" soda... see those strike me as funny. Drink water!!

I just dive into a big pile of granulated sugar and rub it all over my body - the writhing moves it into my mouth automatically. Until my skin hardened up I had to use powdered sugar tho.

Seriously, prepared foods have large amounts of sugar and salt in them and are a big effect on the 'Murican diet.

The Japanese diet is bicameral.

It's one thing to carry some extra pounds but be healthy , it's quite another to carry an extra 100-200 pounds or more . I am 5' 10" and 220 pounds . I am naturally barrel chested so carry the weight well . Would I be better at 200 pounds absolutely but I would be in real bad shape at 300 pounds .

I came in about an hour ago after working outside for 6 hours in 93 degrees and humid , not bad for 62 years old . I have been working like that for weeks now on a deck extension . My point is you have to be active , at least enough to be healthy . It kills me when I see someone grossly overweight order a fast food meal and top it off with a 64 ounce diet soda .

The trend to people being heavier has been going on for quite some time. Do so research about seats in cars and public space. They have had to increase the sizes to keep up with the lard bottoms. Airplanes have had to deal with this as well although it is double trouble because why people are getting more obese, the airlines have been reducing seat sizes and spacing between rows.

Concerning "body positive" thinking. IMO it it totally wrong. We can have a good opinion of ourselves but that doesn't mean we should be happy with an unhealthy body. I don't shun my wife because she doesn't have a the trim body from when she was young but I won't say "its just fine if you are killing yourself by being 50 or 100 lbs overweight". The person inside is the one I love.

cabmandone 07-15-2020 04:19 PM

Maybe it's just a self pride thing? If I look in a mirror and think I'm getting fat, I exercise. I have a ceiling I'm not willing to punch through, 200 lbs. I'm about 6'1 and if I get near the 200 mark, I hit the weights and back off on the food. Some people just don't seem to care.

Por_sha911 07-15-2020 04:23 PM

Good point cab. If the best you can do is 20 overweight but you've done everything you can (some folks have thyroid or other health issues that prevent proper weight) then wear the right size clothes and hold your head up high.

cabmandone 07-15-2020 04:34 PM

I get the folks with issues that prevent them from losing weight. It's the folks that just don't seem to care that baffle me. The person sitting in Golden Corral eating all they can when they're 80 or more overweight just baffle me. They simply can't care.

My wife works in elementary education. There are plenty of overweight kids - boys & girls. Out of curiosity, I just looked at my 1st (1949) & 4th grade class pics. Out of the two, there was only one overweight girl in the 4th grade pic. I remember in school, we used to tease the overweight kids (fatty, fatty, 2 X 4). They were the exception. If we get into a war and a bunch of the fit people get killed off, think what the country will look like then.

And wear clothing way too tight (usually with stains on them).

Agreed. I am sure there will always be folks that are obese. I'm sure there are some that are obese for medical reasons. I suspect they are a tiny minority. Many of the rest are unhappy/troubled/something that causes them to eat too much (and likely the wrong things). These days, the bulk are people that have bad eating habits habits or eat crap.

The issue becomes whether the V is right side up or upside down. :D

I just finished watching the documentary Supersize Me. There’s a lot of cheap, unhealthy food here in the US.

Shaun @ Tru6 07-15-2020 05:12 PM

When I was in Paris last year, I saw only a few fat (French) people. The couple of Americans I saw were obese. And the typical ugly American. Boston area, most people are in decent shape, it's not too bad.

Many contributing factors to where we are today but in my opinion, it comes down to society and economics. Society has become more accepting of what was once considered unhealthy and should be avoided, while economics play a part because it costs more to eat well than to eat poorly. And when you throw in the shift from manual/active labor to a more sedentary economy/lifestyle it only compounds the problem. And I'm on the low end of the BMI scale for my height and have at times been told that I'm too skinny.
