I've noticed when I visited Manhattan (most of my time within a few blocks of Park Ave and between Grand Central and Central Park) that there were lots of slim folks. San Fran also seems to have lot of thin folks. |

Yes, the French have very stringent ingredient laws and worship quality food in general. It was one of two reasons to go: to eat and to see Van Gogh. Both were extraordinary.
My diet mirrors France, I almost never by anything processed other than condiments and then nothing manmade, no high fructose corn syrup, etc. Never anything in a box. Go shopping 3-4 times a week for meat and veggies. Emphasis on preparation, slowing life down a little. I don't get our grab and go culture. That's what makes you fat. Found this 2+lb ribeye the other day. Hard to get fat eating steak and broccoli. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1594862053.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1594862053.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1594862053.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1594862053.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1594862053.jpg |

The entire food industry in the USA is messed up.
All the things bad for us are given subsidies, while anything possibly good for us is expensive. In addition our food chain is contaminated, this puts the liver under stress and therefore it cannot do one of it's main jobs of controlling our weight. I suggest getting away from processed food, especially things with soy in them. Also get off the carbohydrate roller coaster. Eat only enough carbs to process protein. Going gluten free will help cut out excess carbs. Exercise, physical activity and lowering stress will all help. No artificial sweeteners, worst thing ever. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/05/ultraprocessed-foods-may-make-you-eat-more-clinical-trial-suggests Quote:

They should teach a mandatory good diet class in high school.
Feel sorry for the south or cultures where everything is fried. It wasn't till I was 60 that I received good instruction on lean and green diets. Which foods are good and bad, which ones satiate your appetite and which ones make you fat. Now I have good cravings for high protein low fat meat. Shrimp, seafood/salmon/seared ahi, chicken, beef and pork in the that order. I already like salads and veggies. But some veggies are better for you. I have not had anything fried for years. Ok a few french fries but those lose their appeal after a half serving. I could gain 5lbs a week on pizza, pasta, cheesy bread and beer. At 35 and active I could handle it, at 63 it gave me no energy and was making me fat. Shrimp, salmon, veggies and vodka/club soda helped me lose 30lbs. |

Yes, people are fat, even little kids
	 |

Part of the problem is cost. Chips are cheap. Veggies, not cheap.

 Nick,
Yes, my son got the presidential fitness award last year...,, Also I live in a very active outdoor state, do not see tons of obese people. The real question is what percentage of COVID deaths are related to obese people? Since the whole positive body movement thing and being pc is so popular I have not seen that broken out anywhere. |

One of the best books I read about Americans food consumption and how it’s made, is The Omnivores Dilemma. Truly eye popping and based on reality and science, which I know are very unpopular with the more intellectual set. |

IMHO the positive body movement is a good idea. Maybe not so much for some 40 yo obese women but for adolescent girls for sure. Their suicide rate already skyrocketed with the intro of cell phones and social media to their lives. There is a big difference between a real life woman and a rail thin "model" and breaking that up has been good for the young women that I know. None of them fat.
For us men, there has been a lot of positive body movement already. American sports has a lot of fat athletes, in baseball and in football defense. So, many guys think it is perfectly fine to be obese. This thread is actually a good indicator. Some of the BMI you guys quote are obese or at least overweight and you will all argue that it is due to your great muscle mass and that BMI was a false standard. ;) Again, part of the positive body movement we enjoyed as guys for a long time. One thing I noticed is that while I stayed the same size, in the last 20 years, I had to go down an average of 1.5 T-shirt sizes. Used to wear XL and now sometimes need an M! The other thing that is amazing is buying waders - they are sized by the boot size. So I wear a 12.5 or 13 boot and the top of these waders literally could fit 2-3 times my waist. LOL!!! G |

One big problem we all have is: High-fructose corn syrup
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-fructose_corn_syrup It's an ingredient in most processed foods and the fast food giants love adding it to most of what's on their menu. Try finding a breakfast cereal which doesn't have it as one of the ingredients. The reason they use it: It's cheap and it has a perfect balance between fat and sugar and therefore promotes appetite. |

The boss of the next department over (adjoining office) at work is grossly obese. This guy is 6'1" and 500# I swear. His wife delivers breakfast in a bag for him around 9am, and he takes an extended lunch where he dives into the soft sided cooler bag he brought. From talking to him, he and his wife usually go out for dinner (whether it is a buffet, or a bucket of chicken), and hardly ever fix anything with real ingredients.
He is unable to stand while peeing, and generally rolls around the office space on his "big man" chair. He is retiring at the end of July, and I fully expect to see his name in the obituary section by years end. His main hobby is online gaming, and photography (but hasn't been taking nature pictures lately)....there doesn't seem to be any shame, or regret on his part, because he is not changing his habits. |

A few years ago, I was stowing hay in the mow with one of my brothers in law. He remarked how easily I was moving around on the layers of bales. I responded if you strapped an extra hundred pounds on my back, I would be moving like he did. I am about 8 inches taller than him and about twenty years older.
My adopted daughter visited last weekend. Hardly ate what we were eating (veggies from our garden, etc) and consumed a large can of "energy drink" each day. She is carrying about 80 # too much and her complexion has gone to waste. 12 years ago she was a healthy teenager. I despair at times, but I'm gonna die healthy.;) On another note, ittending assemblies at out grandaughter's elementary school last winter, I noted there were very few overweight kids in the first five grades. It gives me some hope. Best Les |
