Isn't that my choice
|
I signed up as well. I don’t expect to be selected, because my answers to the “how much exposure” questions will show my odds of exposure are very low, why waste a dose on someone who isn’t going to be exposed to the virus. If I’m selected, I hope it is for the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine as its ph 1 data looks better than Moderna’s (and Oxford/Astrazeneca’s, though that one may not be trialed in the US).
Here’s a wrinkle: one or more vaccines are likely to be approved for emergency use (EUA) by year-end, and regular Joes (not high govt officials, HCW, or medically most vulnerable) might start getting it say mid 2021. The ph 3 trial participants will likely continue to be monitored for a couple years to assess long term efficacy and safety data. However, if those participants get vaccinated under the EUA, that would confound the trial continuation. So . . . are trial participants going to be disqualified from getting vaccinated under the EUA? If you participate but get the placebo, you then can’t get any of the real vaccines when everyone else does? That would kind of suck. |
p.s. The Chinese vaccine that we have ph 1 data for (CanSino) does not look great, compared to the ones being developed in US and UK for which we have ph 1 data. They are vaccinating military personnel and Chinese traveling abroad, anyway.
I could never understand how the Chinese would be able to do real ph 3 trials on their vaccine candidates, since they have suppressed the virus pretty well in China and their pharma companies have little to no experience or relationships to do large overseas trials. One of the Chinese pharmas started doing a ph 3 in Canada but that has fizzled since Canada has suppressed the virus. They won’t be allowed to do trials in the US. So they are trying to set up clinical trials sites in the other countries where the virus is out of control - Brazil being the main one. I doubt CanSino, SinoVac, etc have ever done anything in Brazil, and setting up a trial for 30,000 subjects is not a couple weeks’ work, especially where other companies and countries are doing the same with decades of experience and relationships. Also, if your target population is Asian, you really don’t want all your data to be from non-Asians. My theory was that the Chinese will resort to challenge trials - vaccinate subjects then deliberately expose them to virus. Good thing they have all those political prisoners and camps full of Yighurs, as well as all those PLA troops! |
