Homebuilt racing simulator build

My two sons ages 6 and 13 and myself don't have a lot to of plans this summer so I decided to build ourselves a new toy.

I watched some YouTube videos and built this over the past couple of days.

I had an old car seat and DELL monitor. I ordered a used PS4 Pro (they're sold out at the stores) and the Logitech G29 steering wheel, pedals and shifter.

Thanks to some basic power tools, especially a scrolling jigsaw, I think it turned out pretty good.

Wifey is mildly amused but did roll her eyes and sighed about the final cost, $1,000.

Since Corona I've decided not to put off my hobbies. Life is too short.

I was freaking out at the cost, because I thought everything was free except the wood and wheel-pedals-shifter, but then I remembered the purchase of the PS4 Pro. Whew! $950 for a wheel and pedals seemed steep. hahaha

Nice job. Looks awesome. Many of you guys have some real talent and creativity which I sorely lack!

A buddies kid is now several years into his karting career as he tries to climb the race driver ladder. I met his Dad vintage racing. Gabe survived brain cancer as a kid. As he was going through treatment his Dad built a pro level simulator that they still use for training. I've driven it once. It's pretty cool.

His website is https://gabetesch48c.com/home

Slightly over $400 each for the Logitech gear and the PS4 pro and another $100 for paint and wood. I also had a Yamaha speaker system with subwoofer that I pulled off the iMac and attached to the rig.

Boys are very happy, wifey even did a couple laps

I have two boys that turn 6 and 11 in October and would kill for this setup. My 10 year-old is already angling for a Logitech wheel and pedal setup for Christmas. He's very good at Forza. Even my 5 year-old is shockingly good.

I can't let them see this thread...

My son also is starting to play the racing/driving games. I have tried but just can't drive a car with a joystick. I need a wheel and pedals. Maybe I can get a setup like this and tell my wife it's for the kid.

Now you need to upgrade to a triple monitor system. May need to upgrade the computer to support 3 monitors. Maybe not, but it also depends on the gaming software. Will it support 3 monitors?

I have been thinking of building an 8020 aluminum extrusion system for a flight simulator. Still thinking....

Yup, triple curved monitors is must for your next upgrade. Looks like a nice setup!

For those looking to build or buy.

Volair Sim works for racing and flying and could be a good look at how to build one:

And Obutto is more configurable:

I think I’d go VR instead of the triple monitors. I’ve heard it’s really good. Anyone tried it?

I've been considering building something similar - a "flexible" cockpit for racing and flight simulators. Just haven't done it yet...

Google “G25 inverted pedals”. Easy mod to your setup and makes the pedal feel more realistic. You just disassemble the pedal cluster and mount them upside down on an angled board.

I saw that mod, but for a family friendly setup it doesn’t make much sense unless I engineer an adjustable pedal box

Good to know about the VR headset and the PCA league. I need to get some more seat time first

This thread doesn't touch on gaming consoles or steering systems but to keep things in one place:

I'm planning a build and looking for input. So far plan is to get a Logitech Pro wheel and pedals, a $200ish metal frame off Amazon, use a seat from my Cayman (pulled stock seats for racing seats) and a spare TV until I scrounge up money for a curved monitor.

The one thing I haven't decided on is Xbox, PlayStation or PC. I'm leaning toward Xbox. Thoughts?
