Jalousie slats
I need to change out some jalousie slats to make things a bit safer for my nephew. He is 18 months old and is at that ae where he plays with everything. I got some plexi and had it cut to size, but they are too flexible. He like to grab the jalousies and open and close the windows. He also likes to climb on the coffee table and stand up looking out the window.
Any suggestions? I could go with wooden slats as a last resort. I looked at corrugated plaskolite board, but unsure if it will be rigid enough.

The corrugated plastic won’t be rigid enough. I would leave the glass in and put some sort of guard in front of the window to keep him away. A baby gate? |

How about moving the coffee table?

Standing on the floor, he still plays with 3 slats. He is pretty strong and moves the table too.

Screw some expanded metal to the window casing.

Wind some wire around the lower slats and hook up to this?

How do any of you know what a jalousie slat is?
What is it?

G'day!

Maybe cut some thin plywood out that would fit inside the window sills - just high enough to do the job.
Remove it when the tyke is older.

We had a 1963 camping trailer trailer that had jalousie windows when I was a kid. I learned the word because it’s cool.

That was 1/4" plexi. He's 18 months now, I can't imagine how he'll be at 3 years old.

Get off my lawn!

Something common in Hawaii, or San Diego. Never seen anywhere it gets COLD. My bedroom and most of the house had them when we lived in Waipahu, Hawaii. One winter day it got down to 59. And all mainlanders laugh at 59 for a low, but the entire house was 59, and there is no heat, and no one has a blanket. We rode around in our car with the heat blasting to get warm. At school it looked like we were in Alaska in February with all the locals in giant arctic coats.
To protect the kid, just put up a electric fence in front of the window, one zap was enough to teach my dog and should be plenty for a kid.

We had a lot of them in Florida when I was a kid (pre air conditioning) to catch the sea breeze. Most houses had a room with them on all sides dubbed a "Florida room." Needed a screened area for "outdoor living" because mosquitos were so bad. They are still great because using smaller pieces of glass is generally cheaper than larger ones in most cases...and take less force than cranking a large one.
Depending on how often he is there and how many windows, I would replace the screens with plexiglass and swap them out when he is coming to visit.

Having raised a couple kids, my first suggestion would be just to not let him play with the windows. Some things are simply off-limits to toddlers and they need to understand that.
Having said that, I also would not let him climb onto and stand on the coffee table. Beyond that, I have no idea how many of these windows you have or how often he’s there but maybe simply putting something in front of them when he’s there might suffice. If not, there’s always that word, no. |
