electrical tape

What kind of electrical tape do mfg use in their cars? They seem to last forever under some pretty hash conditions. The 3M tape I buy, no matter the price, starts to unravel under the hood due to heat. Where can I get some or if there's specific mane to those tape?

Silicone electrical tape, self fusing. Stuff is DA Bomb!

Self-fusing would also add a small amount of strength.

It would be messy and permanent, but might provide more of a complete seal.

That maybe the ticket. I am not looking for waterproof but a tape that doesn't come apart when taping wire looms.

I am going to buy a roll of that self fusing tape jsut to have around.

Ha, I had to look her up. Now I remember them from Jr high school. I know exactly what you are talking about with the electrical tape. They can only do that in concert when they are at their prime. Gravity sucks

If you're just using it to hold the harness wires together, most seem to be using either a fabric tape, or a kapton tape (generally used with tighter wraps under a sleeve or loom).

Fusing tape is the thing to do, except for one issue. Until it fuses, it can come apart.

I put on fusing tape, then do a light wrap of standard electrical tape. It holds easy. but when the electrical tape fails, it has the fused tape underneath. And I do fully properly color coded tape

How does it work? How long does it take time to fuse? Chemical reaction or heat? I have never heard of such thing and now I must buy one jsut to check it out.

Some of my looms are coming apart due to the dumb ass spilling oil on it causing the original tape to fail. I go and tape it back with the cheap 3M tape and it unravels within a few months in this heat. I wanted it just to keep things tidy under the hood.

I use black spiral wrap. Amazon has it cheap. Lasts forever, easy to remove as needed.

It just bonds to itself. Heat not needed. It has a film of release plastic under one side on the roll. It is a pain to get it to go on and look good. It does work, but you will be cussing at the idiot that put it on there if you have to get it back off.

It has very little sticky feel to it, and it is stretchy, so getting it started in a wrap with the tail of the plastic release in the way requires three or four hands.

Starts to fuse in a day, fully fused I think in a week or so.
