Civic Type R
Biking today on a trail that was very busy.
Returning to my car...I saw the car parked next to me was a Type R. Not many in my area yet. First I've seen other than in the showroom. Talked to the owner for quite a while about it. He was very happy with it...except for one small problem. He said that since buying it...he has had to replace three rims so far. The roads around here are not 'low profile tire' friendly. He opted for the rim coverage when buying the car..so there was no cost to him. Makes me wonder why would I even consider tires/rims that are so susceptible to damage? Otherwise...I love the car. That Japanese thing is Toyota Truck Transformer ugly. Blech.
It's already been hit in the parking lot..no modification necessary. Geesh. If lines are going to be altered radically, make the panels separate and replaceable at least. In this age of fender-benders...why are fenders and roof panels still attached? The top rear window spoiler doesn't have room for an antenna? Need to add a separate piece sticking out? Make it a porcupine. Why not. College design students on drugs. |
My work peer drives one, in the bright blue color (like the Subaru WRX), loves it. Also owns a RX8. It's very 'racy' in looks, too much for me, but I am sure the package is great. I think I would gravitate to a VW Golf RS or Subie WRX with no spoilers - just to say anonymous in the crowd. But then I am old...so get off my lawn LOL.

^^^ The spoiler on the back is a little extreme for me. But otherwise, I like the package alot.
After asking the owner a bunch of questions...I might be open to buying one in the next couple years. The reviews are all excellent. |
I saw one in the wild yesterday and was not impressed. A third port between the dual exhaust, why? Fake plastic mesh between the diffusers, why? Two wings on the back, again why? The sharp lines do not appeal to me.
Most people will never drive them fast enough for any of the benefits of those features. It is still a Civic, after all. |

There is a "sport" that looks a lot more palatable to me. Besides the 'fast and the furious looks' I just don't think a hot hatch with 300 hp to the front wheels is a good idea. I had a MS3 with 262 and it was too much. This is also a very expensive car, you can get a lot of interesting vehicles in this price range. Even more so if you are not set on buying new.

I could do without the go fast wing but otherwise I think they're a good looking car. And yeah, low pro's are an asspain if the roads have any potholes. My kid bent his passenger side front and rear hitting a pothole in his Veloster.

I was really interested in one until I drove it. The exterior styling is definitely questionable, but the interior is perhaps worse. A potpourri of random red accents in a random and trying too hard sort of manner. Great seats, good build quality. The handling is otherworldly, really obscenely good balance between ride quality and performance. Honestly one of the best I’ve driven. Shifter is great but not special, same with the brakes and steering. Engine has great punch but is a typical high output turbo 4, very mild lag with great punch but overall not inspiring. What really got me though was the torque steer and wheel spin, there’s just too much power for FWD to put down effectively even with an LSD. Applying power in a turn quickly overwhelms the front end which starts to scrub power and spin the wheels. Just not fun. I was looking for a fun and practical four door and ultimately spent way less money for an E63 which is exponentially more car.

Lots of them around here. One or two friends have them.
VERY ricey looking but a fantastic car. the best Civic by far according to the owners. I love Civics and Fits (Jazz's). |
Not a fan of the boy racer look, too many angular sharp lines.

In Europe we have plenty of hot hatches to choose from, Ford, Renault,Hyundai,VW,Seat, to name a few besides the most extrovert looking Honda.
We are used to tackling a corner differently in fwd than with rwd:trailbrake to the apex, progressive throttle application thereafter until full throttle once the front wheels are straight, and ignored what the back wheels are doing( the latter only on the track, not on the road). |
If it has to scream WRC, it should be AWD. If not, it will always and only be a poser.:(

I would also add that I’ve also driven the Civic Si and prefer it. The power is better matched to the car’s ability to put it down and the suspension is also excellent. The styling is also more, ahem, subtle.

Traffic slowed down, and the MDOT truck had one guy up on the top of a dump truck shovel down some loose asphalt into a pot hole full of mud and debris, like any open pot hole. And they drove off. They did not compact it down at all. Only traffic driving over compacted it at all, and with mud on the bottom it would not last the week. The Michigan winters are brutal on roads and cars. Owning a car with super short profile bendable wheels is asking for problems in Michigan. |
