I wasn’t smart today.
Rain is coming Saturday.
It was hot as Hades here. 99? Anyways the air is still Smokey. I Put on on my half-mask respirator and climbed up on my roof to clean the scuppers and stuff. Sweeping ash was like sweeping sand. Leaves, charred branches we’re everywhere. I even shop vac my down drains. I was shocked how far a burned branch can blow. I had eucalyptus branches, and there isn’t one of those trees anywhere near me. None I can see from my rooftop. I climb down and I was dizzy. My heart was racing. I was drenched with sweat. My wife said I didn’t look good. I couldn’t figure it out. I’m not that out of shape. I can mtn bike up mountains! Then it dawned on me. My respirator! I must have been limiting my O2 intake. Duh! That wasn’t smart. It did save me a lungful of ash. But damn. Herat attack isn’t a good option either. I feel fine now. Just sipping ice water.

I'll bet it had more to do with the heat than the respirator. Is it one of those that filters air in but opens a valve when you breath out? I like those.
Glad you didn't get dizzy or pass out and fall off the roof regardless of the cause.

I've estimated that the differential pressure across an N95 while breathing is about equal to working at 10,000 feet (3000m).

10000 ? feet felt about right.
I had to get a doctors medical clearance before I could wear it at work. Been awhile since that. I kept my mask, maybe two mask. I have damn near a case of filters. I’ve developed asthma since then. ![]()

Sounds like it was really hot up there. You were passing through heat exhaustion and moving into heat stroke by the sound of it. Respirators don't make it easier, but starting really early in the morning and getting off the roof at the first signs of being affected by the heat can really save your butt. I have flirted with heat stroke too many times myself. Scared myself a couple of times, and now I take a little more care and take note of how I am feeling. That is hard when you just want to get something done, but it is possible to raise your blood temperature way past what is normal. If you can hear your heart beating loud in your ears, you need to get out of the sun immediately and lower your core temperature.
If you aren't feeling 100% tomorrow, let us know. |

I went through a weird stage of heat exhaustion lately.
It resulted in a situation called Aphasia it brings a difficult in talking , for me it's been about ten days now, and Im just now feeling better. Still struggle in they ing to spell even really easy words at times. It's even worse that is usual the case, Which can be pretty hard, but this has been ridiculous. Cheers Richard |

It's not a tumor, it's not.
Heat prostitution, gets you every time. It is not just oxygen, you normally are blowing off heat and moisture too, or rather, not blowing off. That is stressful, especially when you are old and have been working from home and the gym and the pool have been on lockdown. It is usually better earlier in the day around here I hope it rains, it smelled like it wanted to today Last edited by Tobra; 10-03-2020 at 07:01 PM.. |
