I'm cheap but I don't skimp on oil. Maybe on my son's car. Not on mine.
And the small savings on my single cylinder air cooled stuff isn't worth the effort.

Rating index is important for ID'ing the "minimum" quality standards, as mentioned above. There are many different variables and some pros/cons within them. Basically, the type and quality of the base oils + the type/quality of the add-pack/viscosity modifiers, etc. Another thing to look for is additional car manufacturer ratings. Don’t get me wrong, guys, I do not believe in using inferior oil. My argument was that the no-name stuff is probably just as good in a lot of cases. And for any car I service that specifies manufacturer rating, I NEVER deviate from it. For my VW TDI, (which calls for a very specific VW spec oil), I use Liquimoly or similar European brand. Same w BMWs, Audis, etc.
I think we are in agreement for the most part.
