He’s right about the live shows.
They did 2,065 shows, that were recorded and a few albums.
It’s been described as music that makes you think, because you never know what is coming next.
You won’t hear the same harmonies, riffs, keyboard explosions, tempo or who knows what...each time they play what may appear to be the same tune.
They did that 2,065 times or so, never repeating much.
What is amazing is all of those 2,065 shows, mostly soundboards now, are on line, to be downloaded or listened to whenever you want to.
All organized by years, venues, songs even
For Free
Dead Nuts Perfect Soundboards...no more scratchy tapers recordings

Relisten Ap for iPhone has it all...Free...not even an email required.

Start with Brent and the boys wailing Get in the Groove and Let the Good Times Roll...loud , on really good speakers from Alpine on 7/17/89 and start your day off right.

Did I mention Free ?

Also..181 other artists, live of course, from Little Feat to Phish ...freeeee

Gawd bless Betty Cantor for much of the archived "soundboard tapes" ... recording engineer extrordinaire :). A soundboard must be setup exclusively for recording. The soundboard for the live show will usually suck on tape.

The Allman Bros. Live Filmore East recording was through the Dead's setup btw.

I listen to a JGB show more than Dead shows these daze... it comes and goes in phases :)

Serious question... What is the appeal of the Dead? No offense intended.

I get that Robert Hunter and Garcia were good songwriters. Yes, Ive listened to American Beauty. I just cant seem to understand it.

1. same as the appeal that jazz has

2. lyricism of the song-writing; poetry for some of them

Listen to Ship of Fools for the 2020 National Anthem

Ziggythecat 09-30-2020 01:50 PM

Robert Hunter, John Perry Barlow, John Prine and Bob Dylan are the poets of our generation.

The fact that they paired up with the most innovative band in music is a miracle.

If they had electric guitars in Shakespeare’s day, he would have had killed...

I get that.
This is the golden age of music and whatever you like is better than TV
I’m into John Kadlecik, and the Golden Gate Wingmen, and lots of 80’s Dead.
John Prine gets lots of airplay, as well as Leon Redbone..and Rickie Lee Jones

It’s the antidote to TV and the world

A couple of T-shirts my GF has got for me from Etsy...

I'm a bit surprised she was aware of Pigpen, She is 23 years younger than me ;-)

She also know I'm into Star Wars..so she got me this cool Van Gogh T-shirt with storm troopers and At-Ats

I am still adding to my CD collections, look forward to the quarterly discs in the mail.

There are days where I load up the changer and let it play all day.

I had this bumper sticker on my bus.

LOL, fair enough. I had a housemate that was way into the Dead and Phish.

Dead wasnt too bad, but to me, Phish is incredibly boring music. At least we were both way into Yes and King Crimson.

911boost 09-30-2020 04:29 PM

My kids really enjoy the Dead but cannot stand Phish. Its odd to me since I have been listening to the GD since the late 80's and Phish since the early 90's.

And yes, I may be younger than some of you.

Doo-da, doo-da
Come to a mud hole and they all cut across,
Oh, de doo-da day (1850 Stephen Foster)

Bought the Superstars of the 70's DOUBLE album in 72-73.

Truckin' was on it.
