I get that Robert Hunter and Garcia were good songwriters. Yes, Ive listened to American Beauty. I just cant seem to understand it.

You simply can't get "it" from any studio album. The appeal is from improvisational live performances ... you either get "it" or ya don't. And if you don't know Jerry, that's OK too... pure guitar magical bliss when "it" happens.

He’s right about the live shows.
They did 2,065 shows, that were recorded and a few albums.
It’s been described as music that makes you think, because you never know what is coming next.
You won’t hear the same harmonies, riffs, keyboard explosions, tempo or who knows what...each time they play what may appear to be the same tune.
They did that 2,065 times or so, never repeating much.
What is amazing is all of those 2,065 shows, mostly soundboards now, are on line, to be downloaded or listened to whenever you want to.
