1970 Lemans

A 12 minutes long slide show sent to me by a friend. Very enjoyable. Something to be said for still photography as opposed to video. Anyway, glory days...when the cars were more aesthetically pleasing to my eye than the cars of today.

Enjoy..

It would be interesting to find out how many other cars besides the 911 were raced at every single events from 1970 to 2020.

I thought this was going to be a Pontiac thread.

Maybe Corvette? I know they were there even earlier...a team of 3 funded by Briggs Cunningham. A.J. Foyt talking about that year.."I raced Lemans one time. I won."

Yea, the first year Porsche was invited, 1951, with the 356 they won the class. I think some Porsche has run at LeMans every years since.

With 19 overall wins they are way out in front with overall win totals.

No argument from me on that one. Enzo hated that even more than his loss to Ford..

(edit) But here we are...chatting about something that the youngsters here couldn't care less about.

Super cool. The 917LH Hippie Car really caught my eye. Just fantastic.

Me too! My first cool car. 1970 black Lemans sport, 350 chevy , headders , duals, I had factory ralleye 2 wheels, and ran cragars with spinners on it . BFG polyglass radials, air shocks . Its kind of what started it all for me .
I got it right before I graduated high school. It was beautiful .
I sold it in probably 2005 to keep my business afloat, shortly after I bought my building and moved . Big regret. It is still in the area .

The car I had when I graduated high school was a really cool 1970 Pontiac Lemans. It was gold, with a white interior, and a 350 auto. It desperately needed shocks, but ran good, and strong.

Michael Keyser...

You should buy his book and DVD.

He owned the car that is my favorite 911 of all time, a yellow 1972 factory-built 911ST, which he race at Le Mans and elsewhere in 1972.

I coveted that car for years. I found out a few years ago that after he sold it, it eventually was owned by a guy who lives a few hundred yards north of where I grew up and my family lived for decades. Had I known about it, I'd have tried to buy it...

By the time I learned it was there, it was already gone and worth silly money.

I went to a track day with the Peachstate region PCA back in 1976. They had Road Atlanta for the day. It was a blast with my 95 HP 1974 914 2.0 but not fast.

Of the guys there was an Airline pilot named Duncan, and he had bought a "used race car" for very reasonable money and it was a 1970 RSR. A real one. I slobbered all over it, and he offered me a ride around the tack in it. I was ready in heartbeat. At turn one he was still accelerating HARD at the point were I was hard on the brakes and I honestly thought he had gone nuts and ready to crash and kill us both. Then the car hardly slowed down and we were around the corner and flying up the hill. It was my first ride in a truly fast car on the track.

The same guy has a 906 as his other toy. Another old used race car at the time. Chuck Stoddard use to come down with his 917 and they would play on the track and all eyes were on them.

I remember Chuck’s 917. One of the most original 917’s that still existed. Plain white, no decals or numbers.

Chuck was a great guy. A walking encyclopedia of Porsche knowledge. He brought his 914 and the 917 to War Bonnet Tech.

Yeah, I used to attend those every year. Great events, I met a bunch of great people there and won a bunch of neat stuff in the factory contests.

The last time I saw Chuck's 917 was in Daytona in 2007.

His 914 was very cool, too. Loved the subtle flares it had.
