Who does this sort of work?

I assumed it was impoverished students or others who had lost jobs, but last night the car the guy was driving either was, or looked a lot like an S class Benz...

Evidently lots of people spend way more than they can really afford on a car. If you need to make some car payments, delivery is one way to earn a few bucks.

Hopefully it wasn't leased, with mileage limits.
The guy could have been doing both Uber Black and Uber Eats i suppose.

I know a guy...stay at home dad...3 kids...married to an OB/GYN... money is not a problem for them. He hauls kids around to sports practices and recitals and whatnot. Lots of downtime waiting in the car. He's been known to accept a pick-up order from time to time. Why not? It's gas money and better than sitting idle. He's not an S-class Benz kind of guy, but that sort of vehicle cost is well within his cash budget. Beats playing solitaire while little Sally murders the violin.

I'm wondering is there really that much of a demand for delivery of 60 to 80 dollar food that I can make at home for 5 to 10 bucks. Moreover, I dont worry about ingredients or safe food handling practices at home. Hey you kids, get off my grass....

good pt. I dunno if leased or not

I figured Uber anything would be the lowest class in worker tmt. so this was Door Dash.

and BTW - the guy was 5 minutes late

How bad does his MB smell?

Can only imagine how bad an interior gets delivering a lot of food.

He probably didn't buy an S-class MB with the intention of paying for it on gig jobs.
If you bought an S- class Benz a year ago when you had a good job, what would you do? Panic and default on the loan? Panic and sell it? Or maybe work two or three jobs, hope things get better, and try to dig it out in the mean time?

What year S class are we talking?

I see tons of very cheap S classes on Craigslist because they are insanely expensive to fix.

Domino's delivered their pizzas in a new, fancy looking BMW. Young Kiwi born Asian decent got out of the car and handed over the pizzas. It turns out he is the guy who owns the franchise and works full time in the shop doing some of everything to keep a handle on what's going on.

Smart guy, and probably destined for success. That's also, btw, the big take away from every episode of that Undercover Boss show.

Best job I ever had was working for a guy who knew how to do every job at the company, and usually pretty darn well. He challenged me and everyone else to do better than him because he knew if we could, the company benefitted immensely.
Quite a wake up call to have a boss who you can't BS with fake code since he could step through line by line and call you out.

Never known another exec that could assemble a server and rack, troubleshoot network issues and diagnose the HVAC issues all in the same day!

Food delivery by car? How about by bike! During the early months of Covid, my son's g-friend was an out of work teacher. They live in Philadelphia. She joined a food service delivery - picked up carryout and made home deliveries. The tip money was very good - surprisingly.

That delivery guy who owns the pizza franchise…reminds me of when I was dean of a small private college a few years back - I had just interviewed and admitted a young man, who’d seemed a bit rough around the edges but also eager to learn - into our business program. He’d mentioned something about having opened a pizza restaurant with his older brothers, and wanted to get a better handle on the “business end” of things.

Just a few days later…as I was sitting at a red light in my dented, rusty old Saab, with its perennially holey muffler, I checked my rearview and noticed a guy with very black, slicked-back hair, dressed to the nines in a white suit and pink necktie, impatiently creeping up to me in a spotless, powder-puff white Mercedes. Scorsese himself could not have scripted this better, especially seeing as how I’d suddenly realized that the guy behind me was the very same kid I’d just admitted into our business program!
