Android car radio guys- help please
Hello to all . I have installed a generic brand Android based radio in my truck . Radio works fine as does the Bluetooth . The GPS works but the issue I am trying to solve is the speed readout on the screen . It currently displays KPH and I want it to be MPH . Instructions that came with the unit do not address this .
So I did a Google search and there are plenty of videos showing how to make the change . But there is no verbal instructions and the camera shot is far enough away from the unit that I can't make out what menus they are using . If any of you guys know how to change it can you walk me through it . I have gone into settings and told the unit via a drop down menu that I am in Georgia and the USA but it didn't make a difference to the display . Any help is appreciated . |

The answer to this question is "depends". Depends on whether you're looking at speed that's being reported by an App (eg: Waze), or if it's some sort of speed from the OS.
Either way, the typical solution is the same -- you need to go into the settings for the app or for the OS and change your preferred display units. For the OS, if you swipe down from the top of the screen, you'll usually get an menu that includes the "Settings" gear icon. Tap that gear and look under "Car Settings" or similar menu -- unfortunately, they're all just a bit different depending on what version of Android and what headunit you're using. The Android radios are pretty great, but they have a steep initial learning/setup curve. |

I looked at the settings in Android auto on my phone and don't see an option for KPH vs MPH. I'd go into the settings on the head unit and see if there's something. Could be something as simple as the setup on the head unit not being for the USA.

Today I spent about 30 minutes playing around with the unit . I can easily get into the settings as there is a gear icon . Lot's of neat info but nothing I tried worked . I did somehow change the clock to military time and can't get it back to civilian time ☹️ .
I am probably staring right at the solution but I am not savvy enough to know it . I guess I need to find a 12 year old kid to solve it 😁 . I am still hoping someone will chime in with blow by blow directions . |

What app are you seeing KPH in? Navigation app? Maps? Speedo?
Can you take a pic of the screen so we can see (you don't have to be driving, we just want to see what's on the screen when you see kph.

Did you buy one of the Amazon units? I can't remember. Post the name of the HU and I'll do some looking. Seems like it has to be something to do with standard vs metric in settings.
I looked at one video where the user downloaded an APK file onto a flash drive and installed the file. Can't believe it would be that complex.

You know the deal
What brand is the head unit What model is the head unit Is this KPH displayed using the head units native navigation app? Or, is your phone connected and an app like Waze being displayed? Android Auto requires a wired (usb) connection between the phone and the head unit, very few are wireless... Note, this is not just connecting the phone via bluetooth to be able to make phone calls... Changing units of measure is just a tic box in some settings drop down...you need to find which one.. And we need more info to be able to help

Holy crap! That looks identical to the one I watched the video on where the guy installed something to set it to MPH.
Is that a Binize or Atoto unit? It's looking like you have get a file to load onto a thumb drive and then install it. I just haven't found where to get the file and it depends on which brand unit you have.

I just saw one video that does something with the launcher. I saw another video that said you could download different launchers from the play store. No idea if it will work or not.

I saw one video that I thought was promising but when I followed the instructions everything was already set to what they showed in the video ☹️ . I think I will have to find this " launcher " app but not sure what to look for . I may check out a car audio shop to see if they have and can load it .

There are several launcher apps on the play store but I'm not 100% sure that will fix your issue. I've only watched one video where they changed the launcher. If you go on the play store and look up android radio launcher, there are several options to choose from. Some are free while some are pay apps. I got nothin for ya on what route to go. All of my head units are Kenwood or Alpine and only show vehicle speed when in Android Auto or Apple carplay mode. Good luck!!

I think you should be able to delete it if it's not one you like and revert to the native launcher. Worst case you could do a reset to factory defaults which should revert back to the native launcher.

Now that I am marginally smarter 😁 I am convinced that GPS speed display on the home page is part of the base software load. I think it's just a matter of finding a launcher app that is compatible and won't screw up other functions . I appreciate all the feedback you guys are the best ! |

One vote for AGAMA Car Launcher. Very customizable and has a factory feel with big buttons and text - - not the "my car uses an Android headunit" feel that most of the Chinese radios start with.
Note that your speed display issue may be related to the navigation app or widget. Consider using Waze or Google maps. Pic of the AGAMA launcher on my Cayenne. ![]() |
