What is this?

This cylinder was in the bottom of a gun cabinet that I bought at a garage sale.
It appears to have a pull pin that I am nervous about.

The owner was a recently deceased Vietnam veteran.

I'm hoping someone here can tell me what it is and should I be " nervous "

Just for fun. You could point a go-pro at it and pull the pin with some string from the other side of a brick wall.

It appears to be either a smoke grenade or a dummy smoke grenade.

Garage
As others have said - smoke grenade, possibly with a small "flash-bang" start. Looks to be live.

Yup, looks like a typical M8 / M18 smoke grenade. I've used the latter (colored smoke) several times for determining LZ wind direction and other shenanigans during my misspent yoot.

Of course, that same fuse may be used on CS grenades and flash-bangs. So you definitely don't want to pull that pin without knowing 100% what you have there.
If you remove it from the cardboard sleeve, it should have writing on the barrel ID'ing what it is.

Just pop it into your luggage on your next trip. TSA will inform you exactly what it is....

looks to be an M8 smoke grenade and the color of the top is the smoke color, ie white.

If the cardboard cylinder does not have any identification, then remove it from the cardboard tube and see what is written on the side of the can. DO NOT pull the pin and make sure the handle is down.

Grenades of the Vietnam War

"18. AN-M8 HC White Smoke Hand Grenade.
(3, Figure 8)
The AN-MS white smoke hand grenade is used to produce dense clouds of white smoke for signaling and screening. The smoke produced by this grenade clings to the ground more readily than the smoke of the M34 grenade. The AN-MS grenade is used for ground-to-ground and groundto- air signaling, for marking targets or landing zones, and for screening the move.ments of small units for short periods of time.

a. Body. Sheet steel.
b. Filler. 19 ounces of type C, HC smoke mixture.
c. Fuze. M201Al (para 8a).
d. Weight. 24 ounces.
e. Capabilities. The average soldier can throw the grenade 30 meters, or it can be projected 120 meters from the service rifle. The grenade emits a dense cloud of white smoke for 105 to 150 seconds.
f. Color and Markings. The grenade is light green with black markings and has a white top to indicate the color of smoke it produces."

Why don't you hit it with a hammer and find out what it is...please have SOMEBODY let us know the outcome of hitting it with a hammer.

The Fuse in that thing is considered to be an explosive device by the BATF..

Seems like 'fuze' would be a sign, a clue if you will, even if it's spelled wrong.

In the explody-stuff world, there is a difference between "fuze" and "fuse".

It does appear to be a white smoke grenade. If you slide it out of the cardboard cylinder you will know for sure as it will be marked as to what it is. Nothing bad is going to happen if you take it out of the cardboard cylinder.

In my 24 years in the military I’ve popped lots of smoke. Unless you pull that pin out, which is going to be extremely hard to do unless you straighten out the pin, there is absolutely nothing that can happen.

She was cleaning out her grandmother's house and didn't know what it was. It was actually a couple of WW2 mortars that she dropped off.
