Let's talk paint

It is actually too late, as I just had my house painted, but I thought I'd throw the topic out there.

We used Sherwin-Williams Emerald. Looks fantastic.

Consumer Reports rates The Home Depot Top of the line and Ace Hardware Top of the line slightly better and cheaper. The homeowner reviews for the HD and Ace paints were mixed. The SW paints, the main complaint was price.

Thoughts?

My house uses Hardi Board siding.

Just had mine painted this summer with SW Super Paint. Looks great. Last paint job was 18 years ago, also with same paint. It held up very well.

For exterior, the only paint I will use is $herwin-William$ Duration... paint is cheap compared to labor. It lasts like no other imo. I'm not AS picky on brand for interiors, but go with SW's good stuff too. Having a "pro acct" saves as much as 30% or so ... none of it is cheap.

I use what I use because of several pros recommending it decades ago....

I HATE painting ... now

Hardi board takes and holds paint so well. I have used Ben Moore on wood siding, but notice that Hardi facia boards I installed held up better as the years went by.

HD carries Behr and not all the paint types in that brand get the highest rating that their exterior wall paint gets. SW is formulated by region so it should be a good choice.

My opinion as an ex painting contractor (1970's) is that most of today's paints are way superior to those of my days of professional painting. I still paint when needed and I am astonished at how good the stuff is today. Glidden's primer will stick to anything. Can't wash if off your hands.

Can someone translate this to English?
Which was rated better?

What is the Home Depot brand?
What is the Ace brand?

How much per gallon? You get what ya pay for when it comes to paint imo.

I checked the SW site after my first post.... Duration is no longer their "best" compared to decades ago. I'd use what James did.... now.

NOT cheap .... but worth it

HD - Behr Premium Plus Ultra Exterior (Highest Rated), significant negative reviews
Ace - Clark + Kensington Exterior (Highest Rated), significant negative reviews
SW - Emerald Exterior - Third highest rated, but best customer reviews and in the same ball park as the two above.

Honestly, my painting contractor said the SW goes on better.

Ace - Royal Exteriors Exterior is the only other one listed from Ace Hardware. It was middle rated compared to the three above, which were the top rated paints.

The main issue is the longevity. If a paint does not look good after "nine years", then it gets a middle or poor rating.

I usually but Benjamin Moore, but I just used Home Depot to color match the window frames on my house.

I was very happy with the Behr paint. And the plastic can with a spout...

Interior trim paint: you cannot beat Benjamin Moore's new Advance. It is fantastic.

BM or SW this is the pro's choice, a little more $ but they are quality, IMHO

I always found Behr not covering well, too watery.

It's a bit slow to dry, which is why it levels so well I think, but I will never buy anything else now for trim/cupboards/furniture.

I painted my house about 12 months ago. I used HD Behr Ultra Premium and so far no complaints and it looks like it will hold up for a long time.

I had painters and the key was prep. My house it redwood board & bat and they spent about 3 weeks scraping, sanding, filling holes, etc... I'm certain that that was the key. They also used primer before painting. I don't remember the exact cost of the paint but I think it was close to $300 per 5 gal. I used about 10 gal paint, 5 gal primer, 5 gal trim with left over.

I painted my cabinets with the Advance paint recently, though used a sprayer. It looks great and smooth, however it started to chip/peel in certain areas but that was due to less than optimal prep.

Even if I buy another couple cans and spend 200+ hours fixing the small issues, I'll still be $1000's ahead from some of the quotes I got from contractors. They were off the reservation insane!
