Ill dig it out and start a thread.

iv got about 15 chainsaws most retain their fluids pretty well. I dont store them on a white sheet of paper so I cant say for sure but whenever they cause a big spill its because the cap isnt seated well because it got woodchips on it. One of my favorites is an 80s homelite and the cap seal is a hard material so if its not totally clean and tight itll leak. Thats the only one id like to seal because it mostly lives on the hood of my jeep. Alot of them the oil hose that comes out of the tank is barely pushed on the nipple without a clamp so im sure they seep when the hose gets old and hard. I much prefer tanks that have the caps on top so they cant leak

My father had a McCulloch chainsaw that never leaked anything. Got about 4 weekends out of it.

So does my Husqvarna. Don't care what brand of bar oil it is, it will leak it.

Only if I fill it with bar oil and screw the cap on. It might be making slightly positive air pressure in there and making the Husky Rancher 455 leak a little. However... If I fill it then use it for a few minutes it doesn't leak.

If your Stihl is leaking oil, then clean and adjust the oil adjustment screw.

My two leakystihls aren't bad enough to even pursue the issue... they just sit on a shop rag or mark their spot. No biggie...

If it still leaks, then it's probably an o-ring.

I have this one for sale, does not leak! Made in 1965-66 and runs like a champ. 100cc and weighs 28+ lbs. has a 30" bar, but will take up to a 63" bar. This is a man's chainsaw! And no, it is not OSHA approved, no safety chain brake.

Sure they do.
Just don't buy cheap junk. In 1980, a 16" chainsaw at Sears cost $227. That's $717 in today's dollars. Today, at Home Depot, you can get a 16" chainsaw for $139 That's less than the 1980 price, in absolute dollars! Don't want junk? Then pay $717 for a chainsaw, because that's what they used to cost back in the good ol' days. https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/ https://christmas.musetechnical.com/ShowCatalogPage/1980-Sears-Fall-Winter-Catalog/1196 https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-16-in-37cc-2-Cycle-Gas-Chainsaw-with-Heavy-Duty-Case-RY3716/206465479

Yes, if you want a Stihl that's built like a 70's Homelight ..... it won't be $300 .... My pro Stihl is a beast in a small package ... Seems like it was 750 or so.
The venerable homeowner's MS250 $300ish is not built the same as it was for decades. |
