Back when I had my 944 Turbo, it seemed like I attracted every boy racer in town who wanted to race from traffic light to traffic light. One day, I just wasn't in the mood, and I had some particularly aggressive guy in an obviously overboosted Dodge Neon SRT-4. I knew it was faster than my car in stock form. He was revving and rolling back and forth trying to get my attention. I revved my engine once and he settled down, happy that the race was on. The light turns green and I threw it into 2nd gear and pulled slowly away from the light. He blasted off right into the speed trap I knew was around the next curve. I pulled through probably 20 seconds behind him to see that a cop had pulled out with lights blazing and was chasing him down.

So I finished getting my gas, then I checked the oil, the transmission fluid, then I checked the air in all four tires, and even the air bags for the load leveling in the rear. I started washing the windows which was a pain since he was so close to my bumper I had to walk around the back of the car to switch sides. I walked slowly. He finally got fed up, and peeled out of the gas station and a cop pulled him over. I laughed a lot. He had a bad day.

There were many different pumps at that station, and he could have gone to any of them, but for some reason he wanted my spot and wanted me to backup into a risky entrance. If he had just gone to any of the other open pumps he would fill up and be done.

That's a great story.

Nice. I had something similar one day years ago. I was sitting at a light in one of my miatas next to an old pickup truck. He was revving the snot out of his truck, and probably would have smoked me if we had raced. I had no plan to race him, and on top of that, my V1 was screaming that there was a signal behind me. I had a feeling there was a cop in the line of traffic at the light. The light goes green and the guy in the truck spins his drive wheel through the intersection leaving a bunch of smoke and a long black streak. Yeah, the V1 was right as the cop was just a couple of cars back and was on his tail in very short order.

One night my friend borrowed my big block Coronet convertible to go putzing around town. He had a kid in a stock 5.0 Fox Mustang that wanted to race. They were on a four lane with a 35mph limit. My friend got tired of the kid in the Mustang rolling back and forth next to him so at 35mph left two 100' long black marks. The kid wandered off.

A kid in a clapped out Honda Accord had to open his door while cruising down a similar road to ask my wife if she wanted to race. She was driving the Cobra replica. She just laughed.

That Accord probably was tired looking by design. A sleeper. 450 HP in a light car, as slight as the Cobra. Would have been a hell of a race.

Glad it didn't happen.

But seriously, most 'kids' with that kind of car want to see some money first.

flipper35 11-11-2020 11:06 AM

If the 4 banger in that Accord made more that 200hp I would be surprised. Still several hundred pounds heavier that the Cobra as well with less rubber at the drive wheels. To match the power to weight in a 2000ish Accord, assuming equal traction, he would have needed 525hp plus.

I have seen a lot of the SoCal sleepers and I am pretty sure that was a kitten in lions clothes.

There was a regular Neon, not SRT4, that had work done. It was quick and sounded like a four cylinder crotch rocket when he got on it. I think it was setup for the twisties though.

The Accord can come with a V6 that's pretty impressive, but certainly not Cobra impressive. It was probably just a kid wanting to see what the Cobra could do. If you drive a slow car, it's no big deal to race a car like a cobra because you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

flipper35 11-11-2020 11:58 AM

It was a four or a six with 2 bad cylinders. The Cobra doesn't have a big engine, but it is light. About to get heavier though with a 4 point going in to replace the roll hoop.

I think the newer V6 Accord can run in the 14s, but the 2000ish runs in the 16s. Not saying he couldn't have spent money in the engine, but if he did he got ripped off.

I saw a Fox Mustang get hooked up with good power and it twisted the chassis enough it broke the windshield.

Thing is you still can. I'd have to use piano wire at 64 years old.

Gotta be careful though, before a choke out.

Odd ball customer pays for daughter's car repairs with a check yesterday. There are stories of him being a shyster. He's looking like he's been hitting the sauce lately. Like, it's oozing out of his pores.

Anyhoo, I deposit check via phone and this morning the funds are not in my account. I get my back up and want to call him or our mutual acquaintance that turned him on to me. I chill and call bank to see if it's NSF. Bank recording says no checks processed last night as it was Veterans Day.

Almost pulled a Jason.

2017 Accord v6 has 280hp for 3500 lbs.
Better power to weight ratio then an air-cooled SC or Carrera

14.2 sec @ 98.6 mph (2017 Honda)

14.7 s @ 109 mph (88 3.2)

Just a data point.

Couple laps on a race track would tell the story.

A few days ago, a customer has a problem with one of my night employees. She leaves upset. She goes home and tells her brother. Brother comes back to start trouble. He leaves. Second brother comes back and now it's on. 3 of my employees kick the second brother out. Dad comes. Leaves. Then Mom. Mom demands to talk to the owner, who is me.

Now, I know nothing of any of this. I was out back fixing my forklift. One of my employees comes outside to inform me that an angry woman may come back the next day to talk to me. That would be the mom. And she did. She came back to voice her displeasure with how the original matter was handled. And frankly, I have to agree. It should have been handled better by my employee.

Personally, I love angry customers. It's a chance to find out (1) what we are doing wrong, (2) fix what we are doing wrong, and (3) show a customer just how excellent we are at what we do, and earn a very loyal customer in the process. So I do. I speak with the Mom, fix the problem that originally made her daughter upset, make sure that I convey our regret after taking firm steps to make sure it does not happen again, and then I try to make it up to them. I hope that my efforts last. I'll be following up for sure. And in the process the Mom asked me out on a date ! So we're going out after Thanksgiving.

And by the way, Mom and Dad are divorced and Mom is officially single.

This is how bad the labor shortage is right now. Jason is coming back as an assistant manager at this same store . He starts Monday .
Wonder if he's been working on his pitching arm

I’m thinking that no stock Carrera 3.2 ever win 109mph in a quarter mile.

And, something that can do a 109mph 1/4 mile ought to do it about a second quicker than that.

Yeah, a misprint I think. Some sites I looked up are also using the 3.6L 964 numbers for 88 911.

Also, 1988 is not a good year to look at specs because it was the Clubsport that was road tested not the regular 911.

Best to look at 1984 when 3.2 was released, 13.9 @ 100mph from power-shifting need a clutch at end of testing C&D . Or 14.6 @ 96mph from more conservative R&T.

Of course the 911 is not a drag car, so is much more than just the numbers. Imagine how much better the Honda would feel if the 600-700lbs were jettisoned so weights were equal.

Wow. That's an alternate outcome.

YouTube comment from Camry driver after passing what looked like a bunch of scrubs….

“I pass 5 cars in less than 9 mins. Tires gone, brakes gone and when I mean tires gone I actually had tread separate after this session. You can hear my drivers side tire literally coming apart.”

Old 911 would be out in the next session, no big deal.
