Shelby (SSC) Tuatara runs 331mph

I am shocked that I don't see this posted anywhere on Pelican.

Apparently, there's some controversy as to whether the numbers are accurate or not.

I guess they are going to do the run again with lots of support so there won't be any controversy.

Then somebody in the forum said they didn't know of tires being made that could go that fast.

Was not it's own thread perhaps, random pictures?

Kach Next time a drive definitely. I got some outside work done finally and some essential paperwork. Had to be done.

You probably need to break in (no pun ) those new shoes in on the streets nearby a bit first before highway and Sunday tours .
Do some light braking and then heavy and put an infrared thermometer to see if the L/R temps are consistent.

If they are going to claim that sort of speed, they need a lot of outside observers. And outside test equipment. Little doubt it is one fast car, but to blow away the Bugatti record need real verification.

At our old neighborhood when I washed my 911 several neighborhood kids would stop and ask questions. The first question virtually every kid asked is how fast will it go. That was all that mattered to them. If they had clean clothes and shoes I would let them sit in it. They all saw the 160 MPH top sped on the speedometer and were happy.

they were using third party GPS speedo tech, and that's visible in the video.

Should be 145-152-ish. I know that I was able to hit 6200rpm in 5th once on I-10 which puts it just over 150, I think. Mine was an '88. I think they might have been rated a couple hp less in '85. But then mine was also a targa which should be less aerodynamic.

On the track at Charlotte Superspeedway I was at 5,400 RPM or so in 5th. That is the fastest I have ever been in my car. With no front or rear spoiler I don't think I want to go faster in my car.

My car did have a front spoiler.

I hit 5800 on I45 between Houston and Dallas once. I don't remember any feelings of floatiness or anything in the suspension.

The time that I hit Vmax on I10 was a couple of years later. I probably needed new shocks and the rear did feel a little floaty at speed.

I definitely think that in good shape, with spoilers, these things should be pretty darn stable on a good road surface.

My boxster's supposed to top out at 171 or 172, I think. I think I've only had it up to 130 or 135, but I haven't driven it as much as the old 911, and certainly no long road trips where I'd be comfortable looking for Vmax. I'm also older now, and while the speed wouldn't scare me, the ticket would.

The general rule around here is triple digits gets your car impounded, and nice pair of pretty bracelets and ride in real police car to the jailhouse, and big ol ticket for speeding and reckless driving.

I can't imagine triple digits on the road. I know my car can do it, but I have never had handcuffs on and I want to keep it that way. Never been to jail, never been arrested.

Being from our area, this car and the speed run were all the talk around here for awhile. I cannot remember the specific tire that was on the car, but it was an off the shelf, normal, readily available DOT legal road tire of the kind many of us run on our cars. In other words, nothing special in any way whatsoever. That little nugget alone pretty much put paid to their speed claims. I remember when the Veyron set its record - the tires were a very special, dedicated design and construction. Even then, their allowable time at whatever speed that was was very limited, measured in mere minutes. So, um, yeah - these guys need to prove it...

IIRC, the tires on a Veyron last XX mins (14, 16, 18, I think) and the gas at that speed lasts a couple/few mins less than the tires.

Probably wasn't mentioned because it didn't happen. It has been shown in a bunch of video's that the car wasn't going close to 331, in fact closer to 240-260mph, maybe.

SSC tried to claim the data had been verified by Dewetron, who quickly distanced themselves saying they did verify anything or have access to the data.

I'll be surprised if this second run ever happens.

I bet it can be done. The Veyron ran 304.xx over a year ago.

I bet if Nascar let teams run with no restrictor plate around Talladega, they could hit speeds of 250mph. More if they let them have additional cubes.
