Yes. Native Oregonian here. Say it enough and it sounds ok.
I recently heard some other "funny" names for locals. Might have been "Missoulian?" "Michigander?" Not sure. What do you call someone from Guam??? |

Just a couple of weekends ago I drove through Horntown, OK. What would one call a local of Horntown?
Years ago I dated a chick and when I asked her where she was from she said Nelagoney, OK. I had never heard of it, so I asked where it was and she said just a few miles Pawhuska. True story.

The default is some version of “[State]-ians” unless the result is too awkward to pronounce or to write, for the locals.
Why is it New Yorkers instead of New Yorkonians or New Yorkians, but Oregonians instead of Oregoners? I get why it isn’t Oklahomanians, too much of a tongue twister. That’s for US states and cities. Not sure what the pattern is for global places. Londoner, Parisian, Berliner, Hong Konger, Venezian . . . most are -ian or -er. When you get to countries, there’s even more variety of, I guess you’d call it entomology. American, British, French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Brazilian, Mexican, German, New Zealander. Some -an, some -er, some -ese, some change-a-letter-in-the-country-name?

Oklahomites? The -ites form is super old school, Biblical and all that. Let’s bring it back, Forumites! See, isn’t that better than Forumians (sounds like a species of alien) or Forumers (sounds like the people who grow crops).

Okies used to be a big slur, but that has changed. Most folks are now proud to be from the tough people that stuck it out through the dust bowl days of the 1930s. All of my grandparents were in Oklahoma then. My wife's grandparents lived on a farm several miles outside of Ames, OK in the middle of nowhere, no electricity, no running water, and and they raised 5 kids. They were tough.
Merle Haggard helped in making Okie something of pride.

I grew up in Oregon, but left (escaped?) many years ago now when I was in my late 20's and, sorry my fellow Oregonians, but I don't miss it. I like to visit once in a while, but that's it. Once I found places where the sun shines a lot, I tapped out.
