What do you do when you don't know what to do?

Did you ever have one of those days when you just don't know what to do and nothing holds your attention? I am having one of those days. It started early this morning. Up at 5AM as usual tried working out a little couldn't get motivated.

It's a beautiful November day, weather is mild. I tired cleaning things up in the garage a little. Been in and out a half dozen times, can't get motivated. Did a little here and a little there but nothing like usual.

Tried watching TV, nothing is holding my interest. Can't watch the election crap any longer, put on Mike Rowe boring, the car shows, boring.

Took a drive to HD and Lowes usual like a kid in a candy store. Seen it all have most of it.

Looked at every thread on here a half dozen times already today. So what do you do?

Bill Douglas 11-21-2020 10:13 AM

I tend to go for a drive. Probably taking the dogs to a beach. It usually turns out to be a good time with the dogs enthusiasm rubbing off on me.

The beach would be great and used to be my go to. I grew up in a beach town and that is where my business is. My commute to work used to be get coffee drive the beach to the street my office is on go to work. I currently live about an hour and a half away. Once I sell this house, I will be back there.

cabmandone 11-21-2020 10:31 AM

I go hunting.

My wife is always coming up with little things to do for her. Like this morning, she made some Xmas pillows out of an old sweater and wanted some pic's taken of them. So I got to play with my camera's some.

I think the Covid and political coverage has worn all of us out. I know I'm sick of it.

Drive with any excuse I can think of.
DD gets 40-42 mpg. Cheaper than being near the fridge.

Interesting video. With no smart phone, it seems I'm doing something good.

Ha! Yes. And interestingly, most of the good advice here is to go do something (hunting, driving..) that forces one to be with one's own thoughts. -scary as that may be. ;)

ckelly78z 11-21-2020 12:27 PM

I get outside to my shop, there are always things to do out there. I RARELY pull out my phone and just scroll, or play video games, I am not a techie, and really don't go for gadgets. Living on a 10 acre farm, there are unfinished projects galore like what I did today...we drug up about 10 good sized trees from my creek that had been dead, but got blown over in the recent wind storms. This will supply about 1/2 of the firewood I need for next years supply.

^^^^^^^ This. Probably 4 times a week, I go driving back roads for an hour or two. Very relaxing and I am seeing new things.

Por_sha911 11-21-2020 02:49 PM

Go read PARF. It will make you laugh, cry or cuss.

oldE 11-21-2020 03:00 PM

Grab a guitar. Dig through the piles of old song books.
I need the practice.

Best

After reading this thread at 4:30 this afternoon, I went out to the shop and mounted my power lift/angle snowblade on my JD 318, I also put on a new steering ball, and moved several things around in the shop to make more floor space.

You need a nap.

The onset of sleep may be hastened with Little Debbie Nutty Bars, a big bowl of ice cream or the sugar coma delivery vehicle of your choosing.

Supplement with a YouTube David Attenborough documentary.

Lately iv been getting pretty good at spacing out and wasting the day away. wake up at ten go for a bike ride till 1 eat then go for a walk in the woods make a little campfire then its time to eat again and spend the night on the computer. Easy. I dont have tv. Maybe you need a hobby you havnt tried before. Metal detecting or wood working. Scroll saw is kinda fun in the winter time. I know alot of people drive around aimlessly but I find it kinda depressing unless i find some free stuff on the side of the road like scrap metal. But i can only fit so much in the porsche.

Meet some other peeps that are bored. I fell in with a couple of guys at Starbucks. There's a loose group of about 15, with 2-4 at a table most days. Some more regular than others. Actually have 4-5 women that stop by from time to time. Wonderful people, very supportive. It's all hands for birthdays.

But you have to work at it a bit. What did Woody Allen say, "90% of life is just showing up."

look 171 11-21-2020 10:11 PM

I rarely have one of those days. they come around once or twice a year. I have two young teenage boys so if I have anytime at all, we go and try to do stuff. I did last Sunday. Slept in until 9. It was good to recharged my battery. Moped around all morning thinking of something to so since there are plenty, but at the end, I was just a bit lazy and accepted it, which was good. So I decided to take a walk around the canyon, two miles loop. Had lunch and decided to clean up the windshield of the 993 and go for a drive to spend the old gas out of the car. This just sits most time due to lack of interest with the 911s and being crazy busy with work. Went our for a drive after 2pm into our local mts. Its a 20 miles of sitting behind some minivan through the twisties. Its was not as bad as you guys think. I was able to open up for a good 10 miles of it passing a couple of cars. Did nothing for the rest of the day. Its was good.

I think you guys are going about it the wrong way. There's always things to do, clean this or or organize that. How about doing something absolutely none productive and out of the ordinary just to break that habit of having to doing something productive. It sure made me feel pretty damn good last Sunday. Now, I am going out tomorrow morning with a bunch of local 911 guys for drive to a shop just to check things out. I haven't done that in a loooong time. Maybe 3-4 years. Looking forward to it.

That sounds like my dad. There's a local McDonald the old guys go and just sit for an hour or two with a cup of coffee or a bag of fries. He jsut showed up one day and started yapping with them. They became very good friends and are all retired.

Interesting Dr C. I had a similar day , however I have end of semester stuff to do and just couldn't get my head into any of it. I remember a quote from the Ken Burns Civil War series " today we had nothing to do, so that's what we did."

I usually find something to occupy my mind if not my body, even if it's just re-organizing the work bench or some such. Failing all I usually end up walking the neighborhood.

pavulon 11-22-2020 05:01 AM

pick a good podcast and play it while doing whatever sucked before picking the podcast. For me, this was the only thing that made pushing a mower for 3 straight hours tolerable.

GH85Carrera 11-22-2020 06:09 AM

I mosey out to my garage. With the 85 911 and the 86 El Camino there is always some little task that needs attention. Always. With a combined 69 years of age and 549,000 miles there is something to replace, or clean, wax, vacuum, or re-wire or just routine lubrication. Always. I can go out there and find something to do on one or the other anytime. It is part of my car hobby.

My wife would love it if I sold them, and bought modern replacements. There are no real modern replacements for either vehicle. I don't want to be yet another pickup truck driver, and there is no car prettier or more quintessential of a driver's car than a G body 911. Both cars are worth far more than I paid for them.

wdfifteen 11-22-2020 08:31 AM

I work logic puzzles. I'm having one of those days today. Did two level 3 puzzles, got ambitious enough to start a pot of chili. I tend to cook something simple on days like this.

tabs 11-22-2020 08:37 AM

I maniacially run around in circles..while shrieking the sky is falling.

I find getting outside in the sunshine, air, trees, seeing animals going about their daily business, breathing fresh air, & getting the blood circulating lifts my spirit. Maybe it's not the same for everybody, but "studies have proven" getting outside like that improves your mood. Sometimes just going for a nice walk or hike makes a person feel much better and more energized.

Perfect.

I do Scrabble every morning before I go exercise. I either walk/jog three miles or use the elliptical, with stretching, six days a week. I am semi pain free with CBO's and I take complete advantage of that.

I am done by 0800 and then start work, from home. We are busy but I still need a routine to focus on....Navy Pilot much:D

I then go for a drive, everyday, at noon unless we have a client meeting. I go for a drive, then, after the meeting. On the weekends I am outside. The best tonic is air.

I am not a social animal, but I like to see people I don't want to talk to.

stevej37 11-22-2020 08:53 AM

^^^ My favorite is the 'Jumble'
Play it every day that I find it in the paper.

wdfifteen 11-22-2020 04:26 PM

It's 8:30PM and I haven't gotten dressed yet.
I guess I'll just blow this day off now.

That's when I have too many things to do, and have trouble prioritizing. Which unfortunately, has been too often this year. SmileWavy

A930Rocket 11-22-2020 11:20 PM

Take a nap.

ckelly78z 11-23-2020 01:45 AM

Yesterday was somewhat of a blowoff day after having a really busy Saturday. Sunday was windy, and rainy with not a hint of sunshine, and spitting snow later. I swept the house, did the dishes, took out the trash, and watched some football...no reason to go anywhere.

KFC911 11-23-2020 02:13 AM
