driving a Giant Truck daily.
i thought i would hate it.
i have a Tacoma, that is like a scalpel by comparison. but my work truck: lovingly named "the Mother ship", is a Ford F350, longassbed. i have gotten so used to it. i tend to back it into parking spaces to facilitate an easy get away. the room, the solid feel, the panoramic view. not bad. i know the corners, and can keep them out of harms way. not sure i can run it down San Fransisco streets to eat a nice dinner out, but up here in Sonoma County,,not bad! put my feet to the fire when it comes to getting my next personal truck, it would probably be a 3rd Gen Tacoma 4x4, but i wouldn't hate a big 3/4ton, except the fuel mileage, i suppose. it would clear one, "bass-boat" hurdle. ![]()

What year is it, Cliff? Latest generation aluminum Super Duty? They are the pinnacle of PU truck evolution...amazing trucks. They drive like a really huge car.

I like my F150 DD, great pep and better MPG than my 2016 4Runner. One of the guys at work wants an F150, he now drives a Tacoma. I tell him the Toyota is "The training bra of pickup trucks".

I drive a Toyota pickup. My neighbor loaned my his F150. I hated it. It felt like I was driving an H1 Hummvee. If it's a training bra, that's fine. I have other attributes.

The twin turbo's on my F-150 make towing a dream. Drive along with cruise control, heated seats with music streaming.
Other P/U is a 22R Toyota with 336,000

When my Tundra wears out (hopefully a decade or so from now) and the farm is sold I'll go with a smaller truck unless I need the towing heft.
I'll keep the LC since I like to have three vehicles in rotation. I have been DD'ing my Tundra since the LC is getting a bunch of work done. It took a few hours to re-calibrate how I drive in crowded parking lots, etc. but more or less an easy day. Great on the highway, fantastic, even.

Most Taco owners end up in a Tundra.

When I went from my 01 F150 to my 14 F150, the truck seemed huge by comparison. I've gotten used to driving it and it does well in town and on the highway.
For parking, backing in with the rear view camera is the only way to go. It's much easier than pulling in and backing out. |

Drove an A8L. Swapped it for the Ram 1500.
It’s taller, doesn’t accelerate as quick - the Audi was a rocket ship - and doesnt have massaging back seats - so my children tell me. Other than that there’s not much difference. O wait. The truck hasnt spent 1/3 of my ownership in the shop. So there’s that. Parking is pretty much the same though. |

To each their own... I personally can’t stand pickups. I owned a GMC ¾ ton for a number of years and don’t miss it at all. Just totally piggish and impractical. If I were a subcontractor or something, sure but 99% of the time it was just me and maybe a laptop bag or sack of groceries 1 and in an urban environment where I couldn’t fit into most parallel spots or subterranean parking garages. Ugh...
I like the European approach - much more sensible. But that’s just me. If it thrills ya and it’s what you want to spend your money on, go for it. Last edited by Porsche-O-Phile; 12-22-2020 at 09:19 AM.. |

I drove a Tacoma for around 15 years. Great truck, easy to work on, 4WD worked great.
The full size pickups today are not your Grandfather's pickup. Roomy with a decent ride, I don't know if I could go back to a smaller truck.

Im finally getting burned out on driving big trucks . Probably been 15 years now, ever since I have needed them nearly daily for the rentals, and the shop .
I currently have 2 3/'4 ton trucks, and a one ton Dually, the 3/4 ton was my daily for the last 5 years . Drove it to Florida twice, the outer banks at least 5 times. Hauled gravel, lumber , motors, axles, cinder block, motorcycles, engines, rental house debris, and everything else in between . Its nice to be back in a sporty driving , nice looking car again . And as an added bonus, no one will be wondering what I am compensating for . I think when this one wears out, I am going to replace it with a Ridgeline, and keep the dually for hauling stuff .

I'll pick my Ford T-350 over a pickup. I had a great '03 F-350 and never used it anywhere near its max abilities. Although the F-350 could handle heavier tasks, the van does all I want and more.

Every since my daughter started driving and took my dedicated airport car (when I went to the airport in the time before the covids) I daily my 2012 F350 Crew Cab 8 foot bed. Like has been mentioned, I back into spots. I have also taught my daughter how to drive it, if she can park that she can park anything.
I am on the hunt for a bigger SUV though so I can park the truck and just use it sparingly. My camper is so heavy that the Powerstroke gets a good workout. |

Many years ago my only car was a 1974 914 2.0. I had a large 500 pound crate I needed to pickup at a freight yard. I swapped cars for the day with a buddy that had a F250 crew cab, long bed, with a full pipe rack over the roof. I thought I was driving a barge. It was simply double the size or more than my 914. I was really happy to swap vehicles back.
