How about a rule that the last five laps must be green flag racing.

That smells like something NASCAR would do given their green / white checker.

I’m glad to see how it turned out. I think there have been questionable steward decisions all season and today didn’t seem too different than what we’ve seen.

I was very glad to see Lewis and his dad congratulate Max and his dad. Very gentlemanly in the end.

I can’t wait for next season!

How does that work if the race has to be red-flagged with fewer than 5 remaining?

Easy, It restarts and must have 5 green laps. It's a motor race.

Wouldn't work. Cars have just enough fuel to make it to the end. I guess theoretically they could fuel to have an extra 5 laps, but some tracks are too long and the tank capacity might not be enough. Lastly, what would happen in Saudia Arabia where they had 2 red flags in 5 laps, I think.

Just sounds too gimmicky.

‘Perfect’ end to a CRAZY season.
This is why I’ve been watching every season of F1 for the last 20 years.

If race is red flagged the cars return to the pits. Add fuel to the cars. Shocking solution.

In most race series there is refueling ......, you know as part of the strategy . Just saying .

URY914 12-12-2021 06:32 PM

Some kind of a year. I found this on Riddit......

6 different race winners, including a first-time winner

13 out of 20 drivers get a podium

4 different teams winning a race

8 out of 10 teams get a podium

Max and Lewis went into the final race tied on 369.5 points, after 21 races and 541.5 possible points up for grabs.

Max Verstappen broke the record for most podiums in a season (18)

Max Verstappen finished 1st or 2nd in every race he finished (excluding Hungary for obvious reasons)

Bottas completed his 5 years at Mercedes without ever being knocked out of qualy before Q3

Kimi finished his career with an astounding 349 races

Hamilton tied Schumacher's record of 15 consecutive seasons with a GP win

Verstappen got within 8.5 points of Schumacher's all-time career points (despite the different points system, this one blew my mind...)

Hamilton brought the record for most races with a single engine manufacturer to 288, every race he's ever raced

Lewis tied Schumacher for most wins at the same Grand Prix (8 in Silverstone, aside from the 8 he already had at Hungaroring)

Lewis tied Senna for most consecutive wins at the same Grand Prix (5 at Barcelona compared to Senna's 5 at Monaco)

Lewis tied Schumacher and Senna for most pole positions at the same Grand Prix (8 at Hungaroring, on top of the 8 he already had at Australia)

Max brought the record for most total wins without winning a championship to 19, before actually winning it

Lewis extended the record for most pole positions to 103, ahead of Schumacher's 68

Lewis extended his record for most wins to 103 over Schumacher's 91

Lewis extended his record for most podiums to 182 over Schumacher's 152

Bottas extended his record for most career points without a championship to 1738

Shortest race in F1 history at Spa (2 laps, and yours truly was there from 7 AM with a huge hangover until 7 PM :') )

Most amount of drivers with 100+ points in a single season

Longest pitstop in F1 history, Bottas in Monaco at 43 hours (if you count what happened off-track)

Most red flags in qualifying (4 in Baku)

First race that started with only one car on the grid (Hamilton in Hungary)

None of the first 3 teams in the WCC got a 1-2 finish, while the number 4 did (not sure if this was unique)

4th and 5th teams in the WCC won a race, while the 3rd didn't

Ferrari is now one of only 4 teams not to win a race in the last two seasons

Most points scored by a driver that didn't win the championship (387.5 by Lewis)

Lewis scored more points this year than he did in any season except in 2018 and 2019, including his championship years

Esteban Ocon was the first driver to finish outside the top 10 in the WDC while winning a race since Pastor Maldonado in 2012. Before Maldonado, it was Giancarlo Fisichella in 2003

Max is the 34th WDC in F1 history

Sainz was the only one to finish all 22 races

Sainz is now also the driver with the most points who didn't win a race, taking over from Hulkenberg after the race in Jeddah.

Most races without a DNF in a single year. 3 in total, or 25% of all races without a DNF in F1 history.

Mike Billings 12-13-2021 04:36 AM

I think Masi miscalculated.

Red Bull called him to say move the other cars and let them race.

But it was no contest and boring because of Max's tires.

It would have been cool to watch Max pass 6 cars on those fresh softs and go for the win!

javadog 12-13-2021 05:05 AM

I don’t think they should allow the back markers to unlap themselves. The guy in front has worked his way through the traffic, everybody behind him should have to do the same. That’s just a part of racing. I’m not much of a fan of rules that are put into place to up the TV entertainment value.

They do that in most races. It makes endurance races have tighter finishes. Many times a car is out for 10 laps, and can gain all of that back and be on the same lap and compete for a win in a 12 or 24 hour race.

I agree that in a F1 race it is just stupid. It is too short of a race to ever really help the back-markers.

javadog 12-13-2021 05:23 AM

It wasn’t the back markers I was thinking about. I think if the driver is better at working his way through back markers, that’s an advantage he should keep and not have to give up.

I’m just not a fan of artificial means to try and level the playing field. If one is it a game show, it’s a car race.

A formula one race is flag to flag. Hamilton/Mercedes earned the victory and to give it to Max/Redbull just to see one last lap of racing is bullshyt.
There was a crash at the end, oh well. Follow the rules, all of them and if the race ends under a safety car, so be it. Hamilton earned the victory and if the race ended under a safety car no one would have complained.
This decision was as ridiculous as the Belgium (one lap) non-race adjudged to be 1/2 are race.

There is a little justice/karma in Hamilton's loss. He got his first title when Timo Glock shyt the bed on the last corner of the last race. This time the stewards shyt the bed.

Agreed.

This may help as Max was able to overtake Ham using DRS and Ham wasn’t eligible for DRS for two laps after. Problem was that was the last lap. Doesn’t seem fair.

Deschodt 12-13-2021 09:31 AM

I choose to see as Karmic balance. Massa was Glocked in favor of Lewis all those years ago, Lewis got glocked in favor of MAx. Yes, too much stewarding this year, and inconsistent at that... In Brazil VER was let off easy... At silverstone 10 sec for HAM punting Max into a wall was a joke (vs the loss of points for VER). 10 sec penalty on the best car in the field means little. The "no investigation" on the restart in this race (where Max sent it but did pass and stayed on track) was also a stewarding mistake, I believe. So in the end, we got a new champion and a very pissed off Toto which is always a riot. Bring on 2022 - and the season of drive to survive should be a hoot !

Someone pointed out that Mick Schumacher's tangle with latifi caused the Latifi crash which caused the Max win which prevent Lewis from getting 8 championships ;-) So Mick protected his dad !!!
