What is the longest oil change interval you have gone?

I planned to change the oil in my wife’s Tribeca before my surgery... I got a 40 hours notice due to a cancellation and with everything else I had to do around the farm, the oil change never got done... until tonight.

11,000 miles... almost to the mile. Normally I do 5000 miles in this vehicle.

On the up side, these are 99.9% highway miles are I run Penzoil Platinum Synthetic in there with some synthetic oil additive.

It was pretty black and I’m not proud but the circumstances lead to this.

What is the furthest you have gone? What is your normal oil change interval? What about on GMs and other vehicles with oil life monitors?

I don't want to say. My estimate of the most miles between oil changes is WAY different from the numbers you show.

I do my Cayman at 5000 miles. Longest Ive ever done. It takes 8.5 quarts so I think it can handle more contamination. My cars that take 5 quarts I do at 3000 miles. I am an old guy so that may come into my way of thinking.

Had a friend with a Chevy S10. 2.8L V6..

Had an oil leak, so he never changed the oil, just added a quart a month. Eventually blew a head gasket. I took off the manifold and it had a layer of baked on oil crust about an inch thick perfectly enclosing the pushrods.

I had a friend in HS that adopted his families dodge van. His dad had installed a "lifetime" oil, and special filters. They didn't change the oil for over 100,000 miles. Had a nasty tap, I finally convinced him to change the oil, and the tapping went away. I recall the oil appeared thinned, probably blowby and moisture.

I go 5-6k regularly on 'transportation' vehicles. Porsches were less than 3000 miles or 2 track events, whichever comes first.

Usually once a year...or 5,000. We don't drive much, so most often it's once a year.

Newer daily type vehicles, when ever the service light comes on or around 6-7000 miles? Porsches, once a year sometime longer if they are only driven less then 1000 miles a year.

The longest? It has to be end of high school or first year of college. With no money, my poor old 1980 Celica suffered long oil change intervals. Plus, it burned a quart every 3-4000 miles so there's fresh oil in it all the time. I might have gone 10-14000 miles before a real oil change at times? That thing ran and ran and ran without issues. 300,000 miles before it met its death with the scoop of an earth mover driven by a Subway construction worker.

One POS I drove (but didn't own,etc - thank god) I'm not sure the owner ever changed the oil. I mean, when you are adding a quart a week it doesn't make sense to, right?

It was a high school job, two weeks, to drive a guy around in his car to a therapy appointment every afternoon. He couldn't drive himself due to the narcs given during the therapy (wound care stuff).

When I had my truck (diesel) I did an LOF every 5K miles. With my T-350 Ecoboost van, the first oil change was when the monitor notified me somewhere over 6K miles, so I'll change the oil & filter at every 5K miles from then on. On my wife's EV I'm still waiting.

2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0 Turbo - 5000 miles
2015 911S - 5000 miles

I keep notes on everything, so it's usually +-100 miles.

I have too many cars so here is my answer

The two SUV's, one an old cayenne, annually. Would need to check but I estimate that is 5000is miles max.

The two sports cars, twice a year, or more. both are forced induction and oil is way cheaper than motors.

The "or more" is if I take the Noble to the track for hot lap days (once or twice a year made up of 3 or 4 30 min sessions) I change the oil more frequently.


best answer is to have an oil analysis done and adjust as per the very confusing numbers.
An old forum I was on there was a tribologist who was good at sharing info and not only knew what the numbers mean, had the equipment to do the tests. I miss his knowledge.,

With better fuels, with better metering, oils (which are also better) can make 10k with ease.

Okay you will all cringe big time when I tell you this but here it goes. I once went a year without changing the oil in my 1997 Ford Taurus SHO V8. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil. The oil did not look black, and the engine didn't leak a drop. Every time I checked it, it was good, and full. I used the car as a daily driver at the time but I don't know the miles I had put on that oil, but I can tell ya they must've built that engine right because I still have the car, it now has over 150,000 miles on it and still no oil leaks. Not my daily anymore but she still runs smooth and strong. I do change the oil on regular intervals now though. Lol.

I also must add, I have had the valve covers off of the engine and there is no signs of any sludge, very clean. I know this is very unusual, I am just lucky I guess. The engine in this car is very well known for cam failures, but this one must've been built right, all I have done to the engine is change the plugs and coils, that's it. Runs awesome.

Whenever the oil monitoring system tells me on my 14 F150 with the 5.0. Probably every 8-10k miles.

When I had my 930 and was tracking it, I changed it before every event, so 4-5 times per year.

On the diesel truck, 15k based on oil analysis results showing oil still good to go. Don’t want to push any farther than that. Porsche once a year, rarely driven. Mercedes daily driver, 5-10k. Driving around with oil and filter in trunk of car waiting for a Sunday when the shop lift isn’t tied up at work.(work sunday to thursday, mechanic on site works mon- fri) hopefully tomorrow, currently @8k miles on oil.

My Honda has a mileage minder that counts down from 100% for oil life. I never let it get to 10% before changing it. By that time, it always has 9-10K miles on the oil and it still appears as new when drained.

The Porsches....once a year.
