I felt extreme discomfort at the edge of Taft Point. I'd feel more comfortable roped in, but certainly not safe.

Anything under water larger than a cod. Sharks, wales and such are utter panic. Even on tv or a picture.

I can hang on a rope on Half Dome 4000 feet up, but if I came across a spider in front of me on the rock, then I would freak out.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a thing about heights. Elevated highways and bridges where I can see ground beneath it give me the willies.

Coming face to face or in open water with a animal that's twice your size, sharp teeth, is not a phobia. This is all animals (including us) know when it time to high tail outta there.

I have had two MRI's. I have backed out of the last two. Due to claustrophobia. I can crawl through a tunel. I've been in a tight space but I could move on my own control.

Last MRI attempt was so bad that I hit the buzzer 1 minute in. I had nightmares for thee weeks after.

I can't fly since the last attempt. Plenty of flights. Now? Nooe nope nope.

Wearing these masks has harmed me. Today I had a massage. I couldn't breathe and had to get nasil spray so I could breathe without fear

There are some larger MRI machines, even some open MRI machines. Can you have your HMO research for you?

I was never claustrophobic until I spent about 45 minutes in a P.E.T. scan machine with no movement, or input from the operator. This is a machine very similar to an MRI, but a much deeper tube. Of course you aren't able to move in order for the test to be accurate, and the tech didn't put on any music, and there was nothing to look at. I can't imagine spelunking in tight cave areas, or diving inside of a wreck.

In fact, while typing this post, I had to leave the keyboard, and walk around because my mind was going there. I have since had an MRI, and didn't have a problem, but this is now an issue in my head that I don't like !

Another one: heights from at the edge. I may peer over, but the higher it gets, the less likely. On the other hand, I wonder what it would feel like to jump...I know the landing won’t be good.

claustrophobia - small dark places.

My first incident was at a water park when my youngest was about 6 years old. We were at a Wisconsin Dells resort. My son goes down a water slide, shortly after I go down it too. No one told me there is a tunnel in the slide and when I entered it, I wigged out. I stopped myself in the slide pressing my hands and feet against the walls of the tunnel. I realized someone was going to be behind me and I took a deep breath and let go. Never went back on it. I don't do water slide tunnels.

I don't do automatic car washes if I remain it the car either. I have done MRIs but I literally get mentally prepared for the experience. That and jazz music from the headphones.

I love those things. We also used to have them in our yard, mostly white, but would also get them in orange. They are like little tanks.

Back when Haley's comet was in the sky I was hard into the astronomy hobby. I went to a club member's house along with 20 or so other members, way out in the country on the shore of a large lake. He preferred we not pee on the yard, and asked we go up to the house and use his bathroom in the mud room. It is just pitch black, just starlight to see. It is so dark you have no idea what the person you are talking to looks like.

At one point my bladders insisted I stop and relieve the pressure. The property owner had pointed out two trees at dusk and said "avoid walking between those two trees, they are just full of spiders right now. I failed to heed that warning in my rush to the bathroom and sure enough I walked right between the spider infested trees. It is dark as a coal mine and I can feel spider webs all over my face, head and body. I can't see anything at all but I do increase my pace. When I get to the bathroom I do a quick inspection for spiders on my but then I pee. I end up killing a few spiders on my arms and on on my head gets brushed off and stomped on.

I will admit that gave me the willies for a couple of minutes, but I was unharmed. I walked back out to the telescope and I remembered to avoid the trees. I still have no fear of spiders, but I don't play with them. I leave them alone if they are outside.

I am deathly afraid of boats and water. Completely irrational and I know it. I have been working to desensitize myself. I took swimming lessons for the first time in my life at 35 years old. Last year we went to Key West. I scheduled some sort of boating activity everyday, fishing and snorkeling. My husband said it was the snorkeling when he realized how bad my fear was. All I had to do was drop 6" from the boat to the water and I had to talk myself into it. The only way I could relax in the water was to have a float and be tethered to to the boat but I did enjoy it. Every boat ride, I white knuckled the railing but got through it. I really love the idea on being on the water and when the boat is still, I'm OK. I will continue to push my limits because I need to not have fear stop me from trying new things.

Claustrophobia
Dentist / Inside mouth anything.

I had a dentist drop a small drill while doing a root canal on the back of my tongue years ago. I cannot stand any work in my mouth. Also, I had a endoscopy where the anesthesiologist did not turn on the juice in time as the doctor is pushing the camera cable down my throat awake.

Now I go to a sedation dentist, go to sleep, wake up and done.

I skydive, scuba dive, wear class A suits and SCBA's, climb masts on racing boats at night while under sail, not a fan of spiders but don't have a reaction to them, so I think it's just the claustrophobia for me. Never had it when I was a kid although I never liked being trapped or immobile. The 'MRI Episode' became all about not being able to move freely or get out. While in the tube and trying to figure out how to manage the panic I stumbled on the mental trick of saying to myself that I was in a quarter-berth in the racing boat. Somehow being mentally wedged between a small folding cot and the boat hull and not being able to move was OK. I'd guess it has to do with in the quarter-berth I know I have a release line I can grab and get out pretty quickly. The mind is a weird place.

Oh, I have developed an intense aversion of crowds and crowded places. Not sure if that's more claustrophobia, another phobia or simple preference.

The mythbusters tested the "Chinese Water Torture." It seemed to me that the real torture was more from being constrained and immobile than it was from the water.

I have used the same dentist for over 42 years. One time I was all tilted back in the chair, and ready for some procedure. He had to step away for a phone call about an emergency and came back to me about 5 minutes later. I was snoring and dead asleep. He said I am the only one to ever fall asleep in the chair on him. So dental procedures hold no fear for me. I have had oral surgery several times for implants or root canals. It is had to fall asleep with them working in my mouth.

That is fantastic, Stephanie.

Now, if the boat is on fire you are on your own

Very interesting thread, Glen.

Best post so far great stuff and well done! I taught snorkeling for a summer in Mexico so can relate to how frightened people can be that aren't a confident swimmer. Really enjoyed helping a few guests conquer their fear as it opened a whole new undersea world to explore

Might sound odd but I feel much more comfortable with 100ft of water above me than being 50ft off the ground

A phobia I had for short while after dying in my sleep was wondering if I'd wake up in the morning as I drifted off to sleep

Was a great feeling each morning after a few blinks of opening my eyes to work out I was still alive Then the disappointment of knowing I had to get up for work would spoil the moment
