Home Fire Extinguishers..Yo Vinnie!!
I have an older CO2 cylinder that is now beyond it's use age. It seems that all home units now are dry chemical. What do you guys use and what brand?

I'd pick up a couple 2 1/2 lb dry chem ones such as a Kidde, to keep around the house. 4 pounders, are a good size too without getting too big and expensive.
I keep a 20lb one on the garage in case i get stupid... lol. I also have a couple of the stainless steel water cans. They come in handy for chasing away the neighbors cats too!

Check those Kidde! They had a recall a couple years ago and will replace them.

I buy what ever is on sale at Home depot type places.
I did a fire safety course at a previous work place so I have extinguishers all over the place. |

How nasty a clean up is the dry stuff? I've only used CO2 to date.

Whaddabout those new-fangled, things? Element E50:
*. Fires for nearly a minute (compared to seconds for dry chemical) *. Non-toxic *. Non-corrosive *. Leavers no mess

Dry chem makes a HUGE mess. Especially when most of it actually misses the fire.
Just look at any car fire a cop tries to put out with one! ![]() I'm kidding, i"m kidding my Pelican POs.. ![]()

We have annual fire extinguisher training at work which is really cool since we all get to put out a fire with a 20 lb dry chemical extinguisher.
One of the instructors main recommendations for home fire extinguishers is to make sure it has a metal head. They see too many failure from plastic head cheap home extinguishers. BTW, when watching a corner worker use a fire extinguisher on tv, you can tell who’s had hands on training and who hasn’t.

Costco sometimes has them on sale. Have 2 of them - one in the kitchen, one in the garage.

Not initially, until it gets in the water supply.
I live near the La Crosse airport. They have used AFFF foam both in training exercises and to put out crashes. While the airport is City of La Crosse, my house is not, and I have a well. The AFFF foam has contaminated the ground water with PFAS, shutting down two city wells and contaminating the wells of at least 40 residents near the airport. https://www.cityoflacrosse.org/city-services/private-potable-well-sampling-for-pfas Now on the other hand, the dry chemical will cause every electrical component it touches to corrode. I bought a fire damaged parts car and everywhere the chemical touched was rusted so bad it was worthless. |

Dry chem powder is usually mononium nitrate, ( i think thats how you spell it..) or something similar. the main downside to dry chem, is that it is very corrosive and extrememly messy.
The biggest issue I see with extinguishers is that people are clueless on how to use them properly. Iv'e pulled up on fires, seeing four empty extinguishers lying around for a small fire that could easily have been put out with one. My department will offer training to the general public if they want it. We put it out on our fire dept facebook page.

We stopped using AFFF years ago, after all the hazards associated with it were brought out. We use class A foam now. .
