Why do we have a coin shortage due to Covid?

I see these signs in many places around here. Why? Are the feds taking them back?

Amen. They want to track your spending. Boy will they be surprised to see how much I spend on beer, beef jerky and Corn Nuts.

Who wants to be handling cash (paper and/or coinage) when it's much quicker and safer to use your credit card?

Not me. People have coins at home on their dresser... and it will probably stay there for quite a while.

As your mother used to say, "You don't know where that's been!"

What are coins? Like those paper pieces with numbers on them but round? I remember those...
We even had those plastic thingies with embossed numbers before Apple Pay etc.

It is because people are using credit/debit cards and that keeps coins out of circulation.

I'd have told them I don't have a credit card... will you take an IOU?

Since March, I use my credit card over 95% - I don't carry any coins in my packet and cash is used for emergency only.

Is the panhandling community struggling?

I heard it has to due with the Feds not working as much, if at all. Coin and cash deliveries not be made because supply is not met. The cycle is broken.

It's pissing off the pan handlers really bad. The government is failing them again.

The local Job Lot has an offer every once in a while that if you buy a gift card, of any denomination, they'll add 40% if you pay in rolled up coins. I went to the bank and asked for $200 in quarters, bought a $200 gift card worth $280. Hell, we shop there anyway.

I realized how little I've been using cash when I needed some in December. Went to the ATM, and my card was expired...since July. Huh, I guess I haven't been getting cash for a while.

I wonder if it affected the Salvation Army bell ringers at Christmas time? Felt bad never having any spare change/cash on me.

In the spirit of the Reddit economic movement, we've been rolling coins and spending them. The local mom and pop donut store pretty much asked for everything we have.

Spend them if you got them! :-)

No Cash = Everyone must have a card.
All cards = No untraceable monetary transactions.
"Everyone has a card" = "National ID card." for better or worse.
"National ID card" also = "Voter ID card." for better or worse.

"No untraceable monetary transactions" = "We're from the government and we are here to help. We will calculate your taxes for you, don't worry."

If you're on E-file and EFT for your tax return or your stimulus payment, or
if you received the Government "Economic Impact Payments Card",

then congrats. You're already on your way!

The alleged coin shortage is just an example of "never let a crisis go to waste."

Couldn't agree more.

Also, since the hacking of info from Target and others, I've returned to cash for most minor (sub $100) purchases. Yeah, I know...cards have protections from info being stolen but they don't have protections from the hassles involved when it happens. My income is not able to be hidden these days, but I don't see how it's anybody's biz but mine on how I spend it.

I generally use my credit or debit cards to pay.

What I find comical is when I went to Panda Express and was told they cannot accept any cash and I must pay with a credit card.....then they asked me if I wanted to donate my change to some charity.

All of the government worker people are getting paid to stay at home in their PJs watching TV and eating snacks, I mean "work" from home.

City Hall, State of Calif, even the Lottery people are not going in to work. I think our society has gone full retard drama queen.
