Get off my lawn!
|
Anytime I have a belt off for other maintenance, I just replace them. But they are just fan belts and cheap not serpentine belts. I also change the brake fluid on the Elky every other spring, and the 911 every single spring. The antifreeze on the Elky is changed every other year, I have yet to find the drain plug for the antifreeze on the 911.
![]() I am a big believer in preventative maintenance. The Elky has 372,000 miles and has stranded me once when the torque converter shaft snapped off. The transmission shop guy said that in the 40 years of working on transmissions the only broken shaft he had seen was a kid doing neutral drops. Mine was just a defective part that he warrantied. He know I was not doing neural drops.

^^^ That was the day before I asked "Where's Old Man Winter"
![]() The Prelude is in there also...yesterday was the first day out for that. (Because of the Fit's belt)

I'd say that you got your money's worth. I've never run one even 100,000 miles.

You take the turtles for rides in the 911's so they know what it's like to go fast?

^^^ Yep..they insist on Targa's for the sun.
![]() A pic of the serp belt. It's only a 5 ribber and I expected to see it frayed badly. Looks like it just gave out. ![]()

On a serious note, just talked to my landlord about the 200k mile 2005 Odyssey I bought from him that he bought new. "Steve, when did you have the timing belt changed?" He says "I never did".

^^^ My Prelude was 50K over on mileage for the timing belt replacement.
Last year, when I had it done, the old belt looked just like a new belt. I asked the tech about that and he said "I have seen them break when they look just like the replacement ones." "You never know" I feel better now...knowing that I won't have to do it again. turtles enjoying the winter..... ![]() ![]()

Why would you put the old one back on just to go get a new one to take the old one off to put a new one on? Plus in the time it is being used as a back up don't you run the risk of it failing? That's why you took it off in the first place. Why not just buy two new ones and keep a new one as a back up and do the job once? Last edited by drcoastline; 02-20-2021 at 12:12 AM.. |

There's going to be a couple days of that beast on the lift very soon and once I drive it under the lift arms there will be a moment of prayer to the higher power for allowing it to journey that far on that timing belt.

^^^ Until you get it in for the belt replacement, (unless you are doing it yourself) I would refrain from full throttle snap starts!

Only way I would do full throttle blips is if I had nitrous oxide. Who puts that on a Honda?

^^^ Nice that you can do that job yourself.
I watched the procedure on youtube and realized it was way too much for me. I've never seen it before...but I'm sure a Zex kit would fit on an Odyssey ![]()

It's a little scary the first time but it is very straight forward. I'm still always nervous but one probably should be.

Timing belt life has become much better since hydraulic tensioners. However, it is rubber, and can rot, swell etc.. due to water/oil leaks and age. I have 207K on the belt I replaced on the Camry, looked new at 155K. I'm not sweating it.
Throw in a balance belt and my position changes.

I change all the belts every timing belt change on my Tacoma. I have done it four times. No too hard of a job..... still don’t know where the leftover 17 mm bolt went

What is this balance belt you speak of? Does Honda use them also?

My 944 and 2002 Honda Accord have a balance shaft belt. You can run with out them when you would like a massage. Harmonics. When they snap, timing belt is likely to go with it. Bent valves if an interference engine.

^^^ Is your Accord a V-6?
My Prelude is a 4 cyl and I don't remember ever hearing about it having one.
