Any steering wheel recovering experts on here?

I bot a 360mm Momo California wheel for my Mustang but I want to thicken the grip similar to my Raid wheel in my 911. I have a couple quotes from some shops that want $500 to do it but I think it shouldnt be that hard! I specifically need the padding recommendation under the leather cover that I will need to sew on but the padding will need to be at least 1/8" thick and relatively firm not cushy. Any pros with experience here?

I covered the wheel of my Miata with suede. Patterns, trial fitting, revision and hours of sewing. I wasn't even adding extra padding.
Pay the $500.

Lots of videos on upholstery. Cechaflo is one of the best.

I bought a cover once and sewed it on by myself- never again, the second time I sent it to Dallas, I think that was the company. Worth every cent.

These companies do wheels everyday and are very good at it.

Just send it to Dallas Steering Wheel if you want it to look professional and right.

As the primary human interface to your car, I'd think having it done professionally would pay big dividends in the long run.

About 20 years ago I got the kit from our host and recovered + hand stitched the SC's steering wheel. One Saturday morning and a few cups of coffee, and it looked perfect. Still does. Ha, I still get a sense of satisfaction having done that myself.

Can't remember where I put my phone, but a pointless (but funny) thread from years ago is safely stored in long term memory until I die.

I’m with you, being a fairly extreme DIY guy myself. But it’s important to note that the cover you installed was already cut to the exact shape and size of the wheel. That makes it a lot easier.

Yes, a whole lot easier.

It was a perfect cut so I lightly stretched it around the wheel, figured out the tension of the threads, and kept up a consistency around the wheel.

I sent the wheel of my SC that had been off of the car for years and was in rough shape to Dallas Steering Wheel. They made it thicker and covered it. It looks and feels great and they are very professional to deal with.
