RETIRED
|
Been on that road MANY times, it is treacherous at best. Almost as bad as the left hander above the Rock Store where "Nicky Mouse" hangs out waiting for bikes and hot rods to over cook the double reverse apex turn.
He gets big bucks on the wipeout footage there. No warning signs but a hell of a crowd. The State has done a lousy job on sign warnings and/or speed enforcement. Tigger was in a hurry and paid the price. No sympathy here....no hunny for him says "Winny the Pooh".... ![]()

I’ve driven that road many times. It’s not a steep curve. It could probably be navigated easily at twice the posted speed (alone with no other traffic). Even if he was speeding, I don’t think that would explain him hitting the median like that. He probably was distracted by something. Just super odd that he hit the median right at that spot in the road, right where it separates in that odd and misleading manner. I find this all too coincidental?
Maybe on Monday when I get back into town, I’ll take one of the cars thru that neck with the camera on. Wayne |

While I appreciate all you have done for us, Wayne, why do it? To me, the road doesn't appear very trivial.

As I said before, things like poor design bug me. My Dad (now 80 years old), complains about how the yogurt companies are constantly putting less yogurt into the same sized container - he even wrote them a letter about it. That's his thing, this is mine.

Poor design bugs me also. In CA each city must have a speed survey report updated every 5 or 7 years. This is needed if radar is to be used for enforcement. It was reported that the "accident" happened at the boarder between two cities Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes. As a minimum the report will have the 85% speed for that road. If the road is long, there will be data taken for a number of segments. I looked for a report under the Rancho PV website but couldn't find anything. Now that two cities are mentioned I'll look under Rolling Hills Estates. I assume these are both cities and not just part of the county.

You all need to watch the Dead Man's Curve episode on Motor Trend's Autobiography. They toss out the theory of a maniac purposely designing an unsafe section of road.
Fits right in with this thread. |

I found a 2014 Traffic Survey from Rolling Hills Estates. There should be an updated survey as they are near the 7 year limit so it could still be in process. Is this the segment where the accident happened? One could argue, as pointed out, that the speed limit should be posted as 40MPH not 45MPH. The fact that the 85% speed is 41MPH indicates drivers are not inclined to go faster than that. In other words if you are going 45MPH you are pushing it.

It is interesting that the Rolling Hills Estate sign was hit and is located a ways before the "gap" in the median. This indicates the driver went off the road well before getting to the "gap". I would say this implies the "gap" in the median was not the cause. The location of the sign is indicated on Google maps.

Here is a proposed path assuming Tiger took out the sign.

He didn't take out that sign, he took out one on the other side of that gap in the road. It's not pictured in your photo. You can see what's left of the base (white) in Wayne's photo.

Okay, I couldn't find that in Wayne's photo. However, I think you are correct because the pictures of the broken sign show a sign with an irregular outline and not a plain rectangular shape.

See the white post, to the right of the green circle in this photo. That’s what is left of the support post. The sign is visible 100 yards down the road, laying near the curb. Just below that, in the picture, you’ll see a large oil stain where the car dumped the contents of its oil pan on the road.

I guess that particular sign was installed after 2019 (Google map date). Not sure we will ever find out the root cause. E.g. distracted driving or driver lost control because of the curve. Phone records might show if he was on the phone at the time. Considering Tiger is a coordinated athlete, not being able to drive on a curve is unlikely. That curve could probably be easily taken at 80MPH or more. Having that turn-around break in the median is probably a contributing factor as Wayne points out.

Good link. Thanks. I think this is the best account so far. Sheriff Alex Villanueva added that Woods was travelling 'at a greater speed than normal,' but did not specifically say he was speeding. I don't see how the Sheriff knows this.. especially after saying 80MPH is common.

I'm just pleased he didn't kill anyone coming the other way.
And who really cares what dangerous drivers do to themselves. |
