Horses from Alberta to Japan for slaughter

Should I be surprised with this?

Been going on for years. No different than the live fish caught in BC and flown live to Japan for consumption. These are horses so everyone imagines cute little ponies. Many of these horses for human consumption are not broken, can’t be broken, and are just another flavour of livestock.

Just ‘cause they are horses, the mainstream media picked up the story.

I think so. A friend’s brother was into this.

For those who don’t know, horse urine is used to make birth control pills and estrogen pills.

It maybe a weird concept to town people...cuz they don't see it but.

Us ranchers and farmers well... we eat our friends. Pet them, love on them, raise them from babies, taking the utmost care. Best feed and vitamins....then one day on the BBQ they go. People been eating horse since before the last Ice Age.-WW

I had no idea it was something that was done in Canada, was aware of horse meat in France. Hopefully there are no puppy mills here exporting to Korea?

The good news for us is cattle are not pretty animals.

Horses are sleek and beautiful. At least some are. It is a shame to bury all that meat when a horse is no longer wanted or needed.

My stepmother was pretty active in rescue and rehoming in SoCal. I spent most of my life on motorcycles, wasnt until my 30s that I got somewhat skilled in horses. Damn shame what goes on.

Japanese love raw horse meat ‘basashi’. I haven’t had it yet. It’s kind of a regional speciality in Kyushu. I’m not surprised that the meat is imported. Japanese eat a lot of strange things, but also won’t eat many things that other cultures think are normal; rabbits in the US. Chicken feet in China etc.

There's a hipster/divey burger joint in London near Southwark station that does horse burgers, as well as lamb, wild boar and cow. Oh, the Lord Nelson - just found it. https://www.lordnelsonsouthwark.com/about-us/

I wasn't going to commit to a 13GBP 1/2 lb horsey burger - but totally would have done a "tasting" trio of sliders, one of them being Mr. Ed. Meat is murder, and I'm OK with that. Especially horses after the cranky preschool glue-factory-bound pony bit me in 1978. I hold a grudge...

I am not sure why you would be surprised with this.

Maybe you should be surprised what goes on in your own backyard?

According to Natural Resources Canada, the Province accounts for nearly half of all Canadian coal production – much of it metallurgical coal exported to Asia for the making of steel.

Sorry if this is Parfy but....

Back in 2006 or 2007 or so on my way to work, a cattle liner loaded with horses hit the ditch and rolled at the south end of Calgary. I was on my way too a meeting with a customer but called and said I’d be late. There were horses running up and down the median, about 1/2 had to be euthanized at the scene as they had broken bones from the accident. The driver of the truck was messed up. The firemen tried to create a makeshift corral with their trucks as we rounded up these horses and I tried to find another cattle liner with a loading shoot.

It was a mess.

These were all headed to Lethbridge where they slaughter horses. Some were sorta tame, most were very wild.

It was a mess doing all this before the sun came out. I think I was 1st or 2nd on the scene.

It was a mess. I did what I could and handed it off to animal control and the ‘trained professionals’ after a couple hours.
