What color interior? We need pictures!

I'm looking to buy a Cayenne also. It's for frequent trips up to the Sierra, so it needs to be a good snow vehicle. There are V6s, V8s, hybrids, and diesels. Should I stay away from any of these?

Fuel economy is not the main goal. Nor is power. My budget is under $20K and I don't want big repair bills going forward. There are some nice examples, on Craigslist, of model years 2008 to 2012 with 80K to 120K miles.

fintstone 03-14-2021 08:16 AM

I don't consider my 2004 TT to be that great in snow/ice, despite the all wheel drive. The tires/wheels are just too wide. They push a lot of snow and water...even with good all-season tires. One would be better with a model with the narrower ones. It is not so much that you get stuck as you can raise the height and creep through deeper snow, it is just a challenge to actually drive on snowy roads where you would not have much trouble with a narrow-tire front wheel drive.

island911 03-14-2021 03:31 PM

^ I picked up a second set of rims and tires for snow. 255/55-18 - great in the snow.

David 03-14-2021 03:36 PM

I picked up a second set for trips up to snow country. I'm running 265/50-20's in place of the 295/35-21's. My wife thought $500 for a set of old Porsche wheels was expensive. I assured her $500 for a set of $5,000 wheels was quite a bargain and much cheaper than recent purse purchase :)

Thanks guys, I am thrilled with the truck. And very glad I called. He did in fact take a large deposit from someone on Friday who didn't need a PPI. And all of a sudden he had a ton of interest with the truck being up for a week with me being the first guy to ask about it. We talked it over and he saw the error in his ways, felt really bad about it, but the guy is coming at noon to take it. I told him I will come down tomorrow (yesterday, Saturday) early and if the truck checks out, I'll take it with no PPI necessary, you can refund the guy his deposit and tell him sorry. I know, not super smart not getting a PPI, time will tell if that was a good idea. He said the guy was paying cash. I said I would Venmo him. Done.

Get there at 10:45. Truck is amazing in person. Not perfect but truly excellent. Needs rear tires. We drove around LI for 45 minutes. Had a blast. Truck was stellar. Went to Venmo him and it says I'm past my limit for sending money. Paypal? Done. Drove the truck home. Friend drove me back down today to get my BMW.

Calling Hagerty tomorrow to get a $20K valuation policy on it and then get it registered.

Weather here sucks for pics. Wednesday is looking best for picture day.

Interior is black Denis.

Yes. I have seen some good prices on wheels...but I have decided to avoid snow altogether. If it snows now...I stay home. No plans to ever go to "snow country" again...except perhaps in the summer. In a emergency, I have a real snow vehicle on mud and snows (an old, jacked up 4Runner)...that I hope to never use in the snow again either.

I don't understand why he backed out of the deal with the first buyer after he took a deposit.

This is a hot topic!!! Maybe it should be a sticky??

So, after all the discussion and thought, I purchased the Cayenne. Solid buy straight from the dealer. 26,300 actual miles with full documentation. Even the original window sticker. I'm very happy with the purchase and although it is a 2014, it looks, feels and drives like a new car!

I will post pictures when the weather clears up a bit.

NutmegCarrera 03-15-2021 05:54 AM

Some really nice vehicles being shown here, guys. Shaun - I love that GTS.
Think it was on PCA web site classifieds(?)

I could see driving one of these!

Congrat's RAM. You should be happy. Expect many happy miles.

island911 03-15-2021 07:51 AM

Just so everyone knows, there is a Cayenne forum here too. https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cayenne-macan-forum/

It's fairly sleepy there, maybe because people don't pimp their Peppers so much.

David 03-15-2021 07:58 AM

I do all my Cayenne forum stuff on Rennlist (and Cayman on Planet-9). But I do all my off-topic here :D

Shaun @ Tru6 03-15-2021 02:47 PM

I typed the VIN into Google and went to a site that listed the truck. Did this with my W124s. Hagerty won't insure it, too new.

David 03-15-2021 03:30 PM

Maybe it's because I'm looking for them, but I feel like I see more 1st gen cayenne's on the road than second gen.

Aurel 03-15-2021 06:26 PM

It looks like the fuel pump (hpfp) failed on my 2008 cayenne V6. It had been very reliable so far, except for the PCV valve that required a new valve cover, and the driveshaft support that was replaced at around 130,000 miles. Now we are at 168,000 miles and she still has lots of life in her, but I am tempted to get a newer model...fix it and keep it or sell it? That is my dilemma of the moment.

WPOZZZ 03-15-2021 06:38 PM

Congrats on the GTS, Shaun! When you have time, can you tell me the step in/over height for the passenger, in the lowest height setting? I always wanted a GTS/Turbo, but need to see if my mom can handle the step in height.

island911 03-15-2021 09:12 PM

Bryan - the load height (lowest) is pretty accommodating. The seats also raise and lower.

The GTS have especially high side bolsters - which may be difficult.

WPOZZZ 03-16-2021 12:21 AM

Darn! I thought about getting a GTS/Turbo and getting rid of my 535i and the X5. I guess I will have to keep a sedan to take care of mom. She's really tiny (less than 5') at 91 years young.

Thanks Bryan, I'll measure tomorrow for you. Even with the truck kneeling down when you open the doors, it's still pretty high.

WPOZZZ 03-16-2021 03:13 AM

Thank you. It is appreciated.

Shaun @ Tru6 03-16-2021 06:12 AM

Quick pic of the truck kneeling. 21" wheels so not exactly low but might be doable.

<5' - that does present a challenge.

The load level is low but they can be set to go lower, if you get into the code. IIRC a Durametric cable allows the tweaking to happen. - essentially resetting the zero point to a lower encoder level. ...but then the high doesn't go as high. You will need an alignment too, as the toe changes with height settings. Write-ups are online.

Aurel 03-16-2021 09:39 AM

My mechanic is going to replace the hpfp on the cayenne for $497 parts and labor. I am very glad I only have a V6, because the hpfp on the V8 is about $1,200 for the pump only.

It is a pain, but not a horrible job to fix. I fixed mine at about the same mileage and have kept driving it for another 70K. I also had the driveshaft support go out and did the jimi fix noted here for about $10/10 min. work.

I did my engine mounted high pressure fuel pump on my 2008 v6 myself. A little tough to get to, but I bought the part online for around $200 IIRC. I searched VW pump that cross referenced with the Cayenne.

Mine is a v8. I assumed they would be similar. I replaced both pumps and the filter while in there (fuel tank). Seems like parts were around $800.

My wife is well under 5' and has no problems but she is mid sixties. It might be tough for a 91 year old without taking a small, sturdy step with you when you take her with you.

911boost 03-16-2021 10:07 AM

Hagerty insures my 2010 GT3RS so that’s odd they would not insure that.

Nice score!

fintstone 03-16-2021 10:23 AM

They are built like a tank. I have always only had minimal insurance liability and comprehensive (theft, natural disaster, vandalism, uninsured driver). Hit a deer once, but comprehensive covered fixing it after that (not my fault/act of God). Cheap to insure.

Shaun @ Tru6 03-16-2021 11:41 AM

So I won't be driving the truck for some time. First appointment at a registry relatively close to me is March 30th.

Boost, Hagerty sort of said it's an SUV. I got it insured today with one of my other carriers so it's safe. Nice being old with an excellent driving record. And I'm sure the actuarial tables for these things are pretty favorable given the normal driver population.

That gives you time to explain how you got the seller to drop the guy who had made a deposit...

Inquiring minds want to know.

911boost 03-16-2021 12:35 PM

Ahhh that makes sense Shaun, might be value based too.....

oh, did you not see my earlier post about my hour long text convo on FB about the truck and I said I would come down and see it and give him a deposit and then set up a dealership PPI and he said no deposit necessary, truck is yours if you want it and then the next day that was reconfirmed.

Then apparently a lot of people were hot on the truck and he had a guy see it and should have said, I've got a guy coming down tomorrow, he has first dibs, will let you know what he says... Instead he took a large deposit from the guy. He was easily convinced of the error in judgment because he already knew he had done the wrong thing.

 That doesn't sound right. Dealer price is ~$400 and is the same pump regardless of (gas) engine up thru 2010.

Pelican and my local-ish Porsche dealer show it as NLA (955-620-103-03)

But is available for under $100 many places.

You may be right, the $1,200+ price tag I saw could have been ‘genuine Porsche’ but pelican has them Hitachi for $385 regardless of engine size.

Edit: actually I was right, see the price tag for the s and gts models is also >$1,100 at pelican:

Thanks for the pics and info guys. That GTS looks sweet in the lowered stance.

oooohhh.... THAT pump. For the in-cylinder injection on the 2011-14

What year is yours? (I'm so behind the times. )
