Thoughts on a Cayenne?
So I'm looking at a 2014 Cayenne from the dealer. It is CPO and will have a 2 year warranty. This Cayenne has 28K miles and they just serviced the entire car at the dealer including brakes, battery, plugs, oil, and everything else included.
My question is do I pull the trigger on a 7 year old Cayenne? What price would you pay? There is zero defects and drive great. Probably the best kept Cayenne out there. Any comments? |
You will love it. With it being a CPO, you should be good to go.

Which model? A buddy just bought an older one from a private party. I think it's a 2009 GTS. I'm looking forward to driving it.
We just used the crap out of the CPO on my wife's Macan S. The PDK took a dump at 71k. We had bought it at around 60K but it was in such good shape, one owner, etc. they CPO'd it. Retail the PDK swap would have been over $25k parts and labor. They don't even try to find the problem. Did a couple of tests to see if they could re-program it and call it a "mechanical failure" if it won't. Full replacement. Long winded way of saying the service under the CPO is great. I just wish it was a longer timeline. I bought an Acura MDX years ago CPO from Acura. 5 years/100k was their deal back then. Not sure if it is that good now. |
It is a Cayenne, 2014 Platinum Edition.

I really tried to get my wife to drive a Cayenne. The Macan is so small in the back. My 911 might have more rear seat room. Sounds like a great rig. Do some searching on Cayenne's here. I think you'll find the consensus is positive and the base 6 cyl is a robust and long lasting engine. Good luck and post pics when you get it!

There are HUGE differences in Cayenne options.
Engine: 6, 8, Turbo 8 Suspension: steel spring or Air/PASM Interior: Vinyl/leather, Full leather. ...steel key or Entry and go ... seat memory options... front and or rear seat heat... pano-roof... So many variations. ... I've been loving my 04 S with PASM and full leather for the past 12 years. |
The pano roof is a great option. The S package with PASM is a freaking blast to drive.

The 6 cylinder is a dud for anything except corners and cruising steady speed. All others are great.

My wife and I love the Cayenne. Had a 955 S, and now she drives a 958 Turbo. Just make sure the transfer case is in good working order. Check to see if it has ever been replaced. Porsche has a 10 year warranty on the TC.

Our 2013, base, we bought CPO over 5 years ago has been rock solid. Now has 110k miles.
Best car we have ever owned. Period. |
Had a Cayenne S. Fun to drive, ate rear tires.
Lots of nagging things going out Mostly suspension bushings. Its basically alll 996 and VW components enlarged 2x. |

I have a 2010 GTS for the last couple of years. The only negative is the gas mileage.

Good to know. Gas I'm not so worried about, it will be a company truck. How reliable has it been? Any concerns about bore scoring, coolant pipes and the driveshaft bearing? Those seem to be the big three concerns with 955/957s.

They are great! Been around since 2004 so they got most of the issues fixed. My wife has a 2012S we bought with CPO, as others have said check the low speed steering and if it feels at all clunky in the front take it to Porsche and say it “judders” in the steering/turning. That’s what I did and got the transfer case replaced at no cost (I think it’s a known issue with these years).
Overall great SUV’s that are fun to drive. |
Just another data point. We've had our '15 Diesel for three years now and love it. Only issue has been clogged sunroof drains leading to water intrusion in the back which shorted out the amp. Other than that it has been great, fun to drive and tows a car/trailer with ease. CPO is definitely nice to have.

Shaun, I'm assuming that you would be using the Cayenne to haul parts for your business.
There is pretty decent cargo room with the rear seats folded down. But, to fold the the rear seats down you have to move the front seats forward somewhat. You might want to try that out next time you see the GTS. I'm far from being tall and I have to move the driver's seat forward from the position I usually have it set at. Feels a little weird and slightly cramped. If you are tall it might be an issue. Best of luck! |

I should probably be OK with just the back cargo section. I'm not super tall, use a fixed back bucket in my M491 that I can still crawl in and out of at 53 without any complaint. That's the actual one. It's not a New England truck, I'm driving pretty far to look at it. Seller is one of the best I've encountered so with a local dealership PPI, I expect to be trying to figure out how to get it back here some time next week.
Reasonably priced Turbos and GTSs are selling within 3 days of going on the market here in the Boston/NE market. |

I can fold the back seats with the driver seat all the way back. And you can sit in the back seat with the driver seat all the way back but it is a little tight. Well this truck will not be mine. We were supposed to talk at 5:30 and he's gone radio silent which means someone offered him more than asking price and didn't want a dealer PPI. The thing is we had a great conversation last night and this morning. There are more fish in the ocean.

That sucks. I can understand a seller wanting a bird in the hand but he could have told you that it's for sale until someone hands him $$. Did he promise to hold it until you could see it? I've done that and always kept my word. I've also told people that I will not hold something.

We texted on FB for an hour last night. In that time I said I would come down and if I liked it I would Venmo him a deposit and make an appointment with the local dealer for the PPI. He actually said no deposit necessary, if you want it, it's yours. We texted today and he again said it's yours if you want it, he has other people interested so he's not concerned about selling it. I said it will go to a good home. He said great.
Clearly someone offered a few $K more for it and said I'll take it without the PPI. it was a $20K truck for $16.5. Who knows, might have been a blessing in disguise. |
I've got a heavily optioned '08 GTS, which we've talked about. It's been a great truck....tows well, comfy, plenty fun to drive.
There are some goofy things that go wrong with them. The Cardan shaft bushing goes bad...not if, but when. There's the "Jimi Fix" which I actually did to mine for about $20 and an hour of my time. I did it as a stop gap, but it's held up just fine for 7K miles, so I'll keep that fix. Thermostats are a pain to replace (involves removing the intake....might as well replace the waterpump while you're in there). I replaced both of those things last year. ...and ended up having to replace the intake manifold due to a stupid mistake (hot shop light on plastic manifold....you get the idea) Coolant tubes are a given. The High Pressure fuel pump goes out...and they're not cheap. In fact, mine is on it's way out...so that's next on the agenda. The GTS you were looking at was awesome...it had the correct GTS wheels on it. My wheels were replaced by the PO, because she didn't like the ride of the low profile tires, so she put regular S wheels on it. I'm at 122K miles on it (bought it with 80k-ish miles) and in the grand scheme of things, it's been completely fine. Especially since you're capable of wrenching, I wouldn't be too concerned. |
Mike - Cardan shaft bushing - I did my own "Jimi Fix" before that was a thing. I actually designed up a fix that was a little better than the "Jimi Fix." Anyway, that was a decade ago. Read; You'll be fine with your fix.
The High Pressure fuel pump - The dealer charges ~400 for the part. This is the same as the Touareg pump (~$40) other than Porsche somewhere updated the design to have both low pressure lines detach (unclip) from the main (drivers-side) pump. (the older 955s and T-reg pump have one LP line perm attached and must be passed across to the secondary pump side) This is a PITA job. --I loath dealing with fluids. Make certain the tank is as close to empty as possible. And in a well ventilated area (outside with a box fan pointed.) Nitrile gloves... The pump assembly barely clears the hole. (fat fingers not accommodated.) Oh, and the unclipping of the lines does not have a consistent theme. -some squeeze buttons, some slide clips. ..and the High pressure side is on an accumulator - it will fountain for a while (eye protection / face shield) |
Long story short, I got the truck. It's easy to see why people were offering more than his asking price. And nice to meet a good guy after a marathon phone conversation last night. Good lord this truck is amazing. You could mistake it for a well used 3 year old vehicle. More after I get it registered.

Congrats. My buddy has a silver 09 GTS he bought recently with close to 100k on it. Our Macan is a 15 with 72k on it. The quality of the materials is very high. They both look new.
