A good friend is a home inspector.
Nice little house in town, where does this door in the basement go? Tunnel going out under the street, he made his own private shooting range. |

Those were semi big business in the '50s. I remember display models on sidewalks in the downtown area where we lived. I never knew anyone who actually had on though.

Many houses built circa 1920 had a 5 x 6 x 6 room under the house to store the gravity fed heater equipment. I’ve got one that I use to store Porsche parts in temperature controlled environment.

I have a friend in Tampa who's father had one installed in the back yard in the early '60 during the Cuban Crisis.

We moved to Aiken, SC for one year in the 1960's from California. My Dad was the Deputy Manager of the Savannah River Plant, a large nuke research facility on the SC/GA border. It was a rotational assignment to get him seasoning at that level.
We rented the house owned by the former Deputy Manager, who was also on a one year rotation. The house had a really nice bomb shelter under the garage we were allowed to play in...ventilated, furnished, well lit, bathroom and shower, separate small bedrooms, the whole nine yards. I loved it.

We lived in a small rental house for 18 months when dad was stationed in Korea. In the back yard, totally buried was a large petroleum storage tank for use as a tornado shelter. All you saw from above ground was the vent pipe. We loved playing down there, and slept down there in the hot summer nights since the house had no AC. I have no idea how it was kept from floating up to the surface, as it was always dry and empty. It was just two miles from Tinker AFB and whoever put it in must have wanted a bomb shelter and large tornado shelter.
