Closing the loopholes for classic cars.

The state of Nevada is in just the talking stages of closing the loopholes for owning classic cars in other words, older cars drive through poor neighborhoods causing bad air for people to breathe. They are talking about either charging more for small checks or possibly banning old cars. They want the old cars off the road. But what about much older cars like classic 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s cars? It’s all starting folks, I can feel it in my bones. It was also mentioned to raise smog check prices in Nevada and use that money so poor people can smog and repair their old clunkers.

What loopholes would they be closing? I don't see how they can ban old cars. Poor people drive old cars. Illegal immigrants drive old cars. That's discriminatory.

In California, one of the toughest states to own a classic car (built after 1975) the car has to pass regular emissions tests. Is Nevada zeroing in on having pre 1975 pass some sort of smog check?

Perhaps Nevada is simply going to squeeze classic car owners because they perceive them to be wealthy? We're all like Jay Leno, right?

Colorado just passed the California ban on aftermarket catalytic converters. It's obviously just to force the demise of all sub-$3000 cars when they fail smog.

I guess it won't be sad to see all those bald tire 1996 Hondas with reverse lights on all the time leaving the road.

Sounds like a money grab, no? How many folks drive 40+ year old cars consistently? Maybe its more an issue in arid climates where cars don't rust away.. In the NE, thats hard to do.

Also, currently many European cities have banned older diesel cars from city centers due to smog/tailpipe emissions.

its not hard to say similar legislations wouldn't hit here, although I'd it expect it to start in LA and spread to the NE cities that use CA emissions standards.

For those with the means, it won't be a real issue either through a "use tax" or an "ev conversion" scenario. For the poor, yes, it means they will need alternate transportation. A car is NOT a constitution right afterall.. its all at the whim of those we elect.

But with a $20/hour minimum wage (you know a living wage), nobody will be poor. New cars for everyone!

Yep, when I was living in Singapore they were rolling out a scheme where cars older than X years basically could not be used any more. At the same time, they were introducing a new rule where "antique" vehicles could be registered and used, but with severe limitation e.g. you could not use one as a daily, kind of like the limitations some states have when using a year of manufacture plate and now you can only use in parades or for other limited purpose. I seem to recall there was something like a 20 year gap between a car being too old to use and it being old enough to now be an antique.

Next they'll try to stop me from cigar smoking in my antique... ewe can come can take my cigar from my cold, dead fingers. Hi racer

Welcome to a fresh and new way of doing things...

Hope they don't ban pool tables. That would really suck.

No but that exotic Cocobolo used on your pool cue will be band. So no more pool for you.

So what if you've been living in Colorado or California but your car doesn't have the original factory cat?

Edit: Just checked - you can install an aftermarket cat in Colorado but it must meet the stricter emissions like that found with California's CARB.

Sure, but the way they would treat them, they would be like old cars in six months time.

Jeez, you know what a nice custom Cocobolo cue runs? Time to put the fold up ping pong table facade on the pool table now. Oh wait my paddle has a Cocobolo handle too.

I think Sacramento is a gross polluter.

Why doesn't the USA have nationwide annual safety checks( including emissions) on all vehicles over 3 years old and up to 40years old? That would get rid of all the badly maintained daily use cars. The genuine antique cars would be spared so the people could still enjoy collecting older vehicles.
