The Travel Covid Excuse
I’ve been traveling quite a bit to places that are totally open, and starting to think that the travel and hospitality industry is utilizing Covid as a convenient excuse for basically sucking. No hotel shuttle = Covid. Terrible service = Covid. Limited restaurant menu = Covid. Airplanes with no drinks or snacks but still selling alcohol = Covid. No room cleaning = Covid. Out of everything = Covid. High prices = Covid. It’s very annoying to go somewhere with otherwise normal services and still see them falling back on Covid as an excuse. Rant over, I’ll go back to my crappy hotel bar food and service now.

I swear my company is using Covid as an excuse to save money. Enough of us are vaccinated now and have clients wanting to see us, but nope..... no can do.
Eventually it will bite us in the a$$. Have seen a lot of what you are saying too Matt. |

As I said in another thread, they use it as an excuse to be lazy (mostly) or save money.

Spot on.. If you're open and charging a premium price, you still have to provide a premium service..
i do think having enough staff is an issue. This crazy crap of paying people stupid amounts of unemployment to sit at home needs to stop now.

I think the answer here is "it depends". Some industries are posting record years, with PPP/EIDL included. Others have completely shuttered. Hospitality is a really, really tough industry to begin with. In my opinion, what they can't provide in services, they should be making up for with customer service.

The biggest problem I've seen out there in talking with businesses, is they cant find workers who want to come back to work.!
But NO DOUBT, a lot of businesses are using Covid as an excuse to save money..

I hear your rant but...
Why are you travelling? Pandemic. People are dying. Majority of people exposed to the pandemic are exposed because they have no alternative but to go to work and work in the lowest paying segments of the population. Hate to say it but you might come across as being a bit selfish/entitled. I think one of your ancestors might have said something like... "what, they have no bread? Well, let them eat cake!" |

The OP doesn't give a rats ass about supporting anyone other than his own self satisfaction (well, at least on the basis of this post, I'm sure that he's a generous and decent citizen otherwise) - have you actually read the post?
Also I will not bore you with statistics that support my remarks about the disproportionate demographic fallout of the pandemic... But you have your own set of "clues" to guide you I suppose... Last edited by Purrybonker; 04-15-2021 at 11:12 PM.. |

The assumptions your are making about the OP are incredibly wrong. I have read the post and please, go full on Kachi with bar charts and graphs and statistics to support whatever position you want.
As for me and my clues, go crawl back into whatever hole you came out of. |

Where the hell did this tool come from? Hate to shock you Francis but some of us work in critical industries and have to work for a living. I have gone into work at an office or other facility that isn’t my mom’s basement during this entire thing. As have millions of other Americans. This is travel for work. Though if I was taking a vacation I’d still have the same reaction, millions of jobs depend on people not hiding at home.

Someone in this thread drives alone in their car with 2 masks on. I am sure of it.

I have been traveling again as well, all by car. I stay in the Hilton chain due to points and proximity.
I like what they have done with the seal on the door, the wrapped remote, wipes, hand sanitizers, etc. But lets be honest, who really knows. Since I am in my car, I carry a huge roller and take my own pillows with me, have for years. The chemicals in hotel linens water my eyes ![]() I have stayed in four different hotels, all Hampton Inns, and the level of amenities varies by State. In Virginia, they just have grab and go, wrapped breakfast. South Carolina had the full Monty plus to go. Works for me, I never do the sit down thing at the hotel anyway. Masks still mandatory. The other thing I have noticed is that at gas stops everyone is masked up and very polite. I do the WaWa/Sheets stops because they each have a healthy selection of food. BTW, we are back at work with 85% staff in place. Here is some data from the CDC. https://www.heritage.org/data-visualizations/public-health/covid-19-deaths-by-age/ I know the CV numbers are exaggerated, btw.

Get off my lawn!

We recently stayed at a Fancy Hilton, mostly because it was close to the people we went to see. Nice suite, and I even called and asked if they had breakfast, they said yes.
The room had the sticker saying it was sealed. Yea, like that means anything. The breakfast was downstairs and it was just stuff I could microwave in our room. We did have a full kitchen so that helped. The room was never cleaned even for a three day stay. I have to haul my wet towels to the front desk to get new clean towels or more shampoo. The no room cleaning was all "due to covid" of course, same with the breakfast. Our floor only had one or two other occupants, the rest of the rooms still had the seal on the door.

I hate excuses of any kind. It would be nice to work in an industry where you can use excuses. In February we prepared for the biggest freeze we've ever had by preparing everything we could think of and then get torn up in the news for not being prepared. We don't get to have an excuse. I've gone to the office for the last 12 months to make sure power plant equipment is fixed and ready to run. Many co-workers have had to fly for the last 12 months to fix problems at power plants around the country. Do you like having electricity? You're welcome.
On top of this, OSHA tells us if anybody catches Covid at work, it's a recordable. Do you know what having a recordable on your department's record does for business! Fortunately we've haven't had a recordable in our shop.

I was in Punta Gorda a month ago scoping out an investment opportunity.
We stayed in a Marriot Springhill downtown. It was our first hotel stay in a year so we did not know what to expect. Much the same as described above. No room service, the bar was open which I thought was funny. Downtown Punta gorda was very busy, restaurants all packed. Found an amazing Irish joint that was as legit as being in Ireland. Investment opportunity was a bust, it was cool to see another town though. We have traveled for pleasure this past year using Air B&B's we did a long weekend for our wedding anny last fall in Coco Beach and enjoyed that a lot. I have a few pleasure trips already in the works for this spring/summer fall. I am over this. These Germans sum it up nicely. https://img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/photo/aDdY5Y9_460sv.mp4

I agree with the op. Traveling across the US has shown me an interesting phenomenon.
Stop for gas, food, ect in a small town and YOU WEAR a mask. You're the weirdo. If you stop in a large town and you don't wear a mask. You're the arse hole.... As for the service industry being lazy..... i would rather directly supported arab oil than fly.

I have had the same experiences in the hotels I’ve stayed at. I think hotel management is just using Covid as an excuse to reduce the number of staff they have to keep on board. Which, of course, ups their profit margin.
