Umbrella issue - Hampton Bay 11ft

I bought a Hampton Bay 11ft umbrella (actually manufactured by Yotrio-- Model#YJaf052) in 2019. Starting last year and still now, I can not get the umbrella 100% open - see photo below. You can see a few inches of string/line showing.....

I called Hampton Bay's customer service - turns out to actually be Home Depot and was told they will contact Yotrio and Yotrio will contact me directly...hahah I doubt it - its been a week so far

Any one have one of these with this issue? Any idea what is wrong that I might be able to fix?

While not that brand I have seen similar issues with older ones where the string gets a not in it and gets caught up. Take it apart by the crank handle and see if that’s where the issue is. It is not that difficulty just keep track of how it comes apart and do not lose any of the parts.

I have the same umbrella. It always pauses in the position you pictured while cranking, but after a couple more hard cranks it fully opens.

interesting. When mine gets to this point (as above), the handle is very tight. Too tight to move any further. And I just tried opening and closing multiple times in a row without it helping

I do recall that by the end of the summer last year it was going into its full upright position

My original thought was that the arms were slightly bent - from wind and one accident when the wind blew it over backwards - making it impossible to fully open but nothing looks obviously damaged or bent

Maybe as 911boost says, there is a knot. Although, to find a knot, I think I would have to basically remove all of the line, not just looking inside the crank handle, since most of the line will still be inside the umbrella tube ( whatever its called)

If the line has twisted a lot that could do it as well

It is not too hard to check out the line once you figure out how to get the crank handle apart.

Just make sure none of the pins fall out that hold the arms to the body of the umbrella, they are a pain to get back in.

So now the canvas umbrella part has torn. Any idea if just the canvas part can be replaced? I’m not having luck finding replacement parts online

Yeah. I think a few good hard cranks would get the tip inserted.

I'm wondering if the canvas shrinks on these, causing both the problems you just described. Crank bottoms out and the canvas rips.

My umbrella fabric seems to have a bit of stretch in it - just a little - and even though it is stiff when I first get it out of storage, by summer it's working ok.

I finally stepped up a couple years ago after 20 years of umbrellas and built a proper patio cover but before that the best umbrella I found was from… IKEA

I'm lucky to get 3 or 4 years from an umbrella. Disposable.

the cheap $40 from walmart, i get one summer, max

this HD umbrella was $500. I guess 3 years is good considering I leave it out all winter (closed - but not stored away). If I can rebuild it like a weber grill...ill be ok with the purchase

There are a gazillion options for canvas-I recently had to do 2 teak 11's- but 150 is not a bad price for real sunbrella. Deals do pop up on ebay once in a while. I used pottery barn canvas on mine-its sunbrella fabric.

Since you have the old umbrella, do some experiments with protective coatings which do not darken too much:
-3M rain guard
-FluidFilm (a spray-on lanolin wax)
-Natural oils like olive, coconut,
-??? Think old school such as British hunting coats.

Canvas is a cloth which dries up and shrinks.
There must be something out there which keeps it protected and viable.

We just ordered an 8’ Sunbrella replacement canvas from Ballard designs online. $119.00 shipped with tax. They have11’ replacements as well. Our original Sunbrella lasted about 10 years. Good quality stuff.
