BaT Subaru: $315k - Collector Car Hobby VERY Alive

Regardless of all the talk and speculation, that fact that this car sold for $315k on BaT yesterday indicates that all is well and alive with the collector gearheads. And to think this is not a ultra rare V12 Colombo Ferrari, Countach or the like...

Lots of hub-bub on this Subaru similar to the green 240Z that sold for $310k last year.

What says you?

Wonder if it has any oil leaks? Sure it does... it’s a Subaru!

Cool car. I'd like to take it for a spin. I certainly wouldn't pay $300+k for it. Wow! For that price, I'd expect this thing to only have 5 miles or something, but 25k....

That sounds like a money laundering scam to me. Paying 300+ K for a car that is maybe, MAYBE a 30K car if it is perfect. Easy way to "wash" some cash.

Sounds to me like a millenial cashed in his crypto gains and bought his dream car from when he was a kid. (which was about 4 years ago...)

While the collector car market is alive and well, the demographics and type of cars that are gaining in value are changing.

I don't know squat about prices on collector cars, but I was surfing the web for pics of the 76 Corolla that I had in high school. They are going for 30K.

WHen we were kids we were drooling on 911's while the adults still insisted true sports cars had curtains.

I love that car, but not @ 315K.

From my perspective cash is devalueing.
I'd rather own a depreciating car than depreciating cash.
Even if I overpay for the car, still a better deal than sitting on the cash.

My personal position is saving for the land/building, which really stinks right now as it seems that real estate and cost of buildings go up at about the rate to save.
Current tax and debt setup biases to loans and spending over saving.
Which in turn, will keep prices going up.
That loan potential and cashflow has to go somewhere other than cash.

Something to understand about this car is it is already imported into the US.
A nightmare, you could by one in Japan, and have no guarantee of ever seeing it here for years to come.

Think of how many 959's Bill Gates had to buy to finally get one imported...

That's farking insane!

I was curious the other day about what it would take to get a nice version of my "first car" which was 5 years older than myself. I suspect there may be some projects out there that are reasonable, but the quick internet search that mostly seemed to turn up dealers and restored cars had them going for $30-50k. I was shocked. It was a 1965 Chevy Impala. I think they look good and can be fun (not nearly as fast as other cars of the time because of their size, but whatever). I'd love to have one for nostalgia's sake (not that I'm in the market).

I think more '65 impalas were made than any of the several previous years. Granted, if they have been restored with great interiors, great paint, great mechanicals, then sure, I wouldn't really expect to be able to pick up an attractive, completely sound vehicle that's 55 years old for less than 20-30k. But that's not what the market has been in the past.

Meh, it is a special edition from Japan. So I could maybe see that bumping the price up, maybe as much as $50k. The WRX STI is pretty iconic, and was a dream car for lots of folks that are now probably 35-45 years old.

Still, as you say, $300+k sounds insane. Yes, I'd almost rather it be money laundering than someone that had money to burn. Surely they could have just bought one from Japan and had it imported themselves for less than that.

Maybe it's someone trying to game the market, push the prices.

Same year as my Prelude. Maybe I should look at selling.
I figured 10K would be great...I might have to re-think that.
