Lake Norman, NC for our Golden Years

Although we hope to have a number of good years remaining, my wife and I, both in our mid-sixties are trying to decide where to settle for our final (fingers crossed) 20-25 years.

I recently spent a few days at a friend's lake house on Lake Norman and fell in love with the place. These are our dearest friends and since we've had conversations about retiring in the same locale, I've already contacted the remote owners of the house next door to see if they might be willing to sell. They expressed some interest but not enough to prevent me from searching for other homes.

If you're familiar with Lake Norman - particularly the Terrell/Sherrills ford area - I'd be interested in hearing what you think about it.

Thanks!

Just across the lake from the Blue Parrot and Toucans, 2 of my favorite lakeside places. One advantage of living on the west side of the lake is you have easy access to NC Rt 16 which is good way to get directly into Charlotte, and also have NC 150 to get into Mooresville directly. The traffic on the east side of the lake is a bear most days although I-77 recently had Lexus lanes (toll) added in the middle of the roadway which has helped getting into Charlotte.

One of my neighbors in Houston decided that NC was the place to retire and he chose the Durham area.

He settled on a neighborhood and signed a contract and funded money on a custom home. This was about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday he called and the builder said he can't build the house for the agreed price. Cost of lumber went up 20% in the past month. On a $780K house, he wants $50K more to cover the costs. House to be completed in a year.

I've never been a NASCAR fan but I'm willing to keep an open mind.

I understand some 40 racing teams are headquartered in Moresville, about 10-15 minutes up the road from where we're looking.

There are worse people ...

If I could get the place I want for $830K I might make the move today.

Thanks for sharing. Funny, that of all the real estate agents in the area, one of the two I've spoken with is the author of the piece you linked.

I’ve driven past and over it, stunningly beautiful lake. For that matter NC is a beautiful state and an affordable place to live, you could do far worse. Also unlike many lake communities you get the benefits of a major metro area nearby which has a lot of perks. Also living somewhere near friends has advantages as opposed to moving into a new area not knowing anyone. I say go for it, and share some pics!

I understand the allure, but the houses pictured from the article are the absolute antithesis of the house I bought for my retirement.

I know, I know, different strokes, but I just don't get it.

Also, have you lived in the South?

Not quite the homes or setting we're looking at.

Does south Louisiana count? Lake Norman, by comparison, is the Frawzin` Nawth.

I plan on doing some traveling but feel I'm already living in a pretty good "retirement" locale.....

You would probably love Lake Norm ! I've only been over it on I-77 ... I leave the big party lakes to other folks, but the area you're talking about looks awesome and far away from the Charlotte side. I have many lakes that would suit me better .... away from the crowds. Here's a list:

Good luck Norm !
