Will the Solstice Coupe GXP be a collector car?

GM announced some massive price cuts on the Pontiacs and Saturns for the next week or so (like, $6000 price cuts). A Solstice Coupe GXP can be had for about $25000.

Single model year. Only about 700 made (the factory is already closed).

Will that be a collectible car in 10, 15 years? Anyone considering getting one and putting it on an ultra-low mileage diet?

Same story works for the G8 GXP, but the production numbers are higher.

I have no crystal ball, but I don't think so. Look at the resale value of most Pontiacs. I don't think the Solstice and G8 GXP are special enough to warrant people paying top dollar on them down the road. Just IMHO.

The Solstice GXP Coupe will be a collector in twenty years. It had what the Fieros did not - real performance, and limited numbers.

Noah, have you seen the recent resale values on late seventies Trans Ams?

Pretty much any car that is well preserved, original, and lowish miles has some "collector" value after 30+ years.

Yes, but those cars were somewhat desirable when they were new. And at least there was a Smokey and the Bandit movie to immortalize the Trans Am. The Solstice and G8 have a much lesser/narrower appeal. Again, IMO.

There are a couple of these at local dealers but "I already have a hotrod, we need a family vehicle".

Besides I like the Saturn Sky Redline better, of those 2 sporty cars.

It will make a fine museum piece, as long as it's nicely preserved.

A dealer tried to get me to buy one based on it's future collectability, but I don't keep my cars nicely preserved. I drive the snot out of them.

Yep. I drive a 41-year-old classic. It's only in the last 5 years that it's been getting notoriety.

Not at 260 bhp on an inline 4, IMHO. It will be about as collectible as a 1975 Oldsmobile Omega.

Solstice

Even though it not a Porsche we have one. Bought in September. #644 of the production run.

A lot faster than my 924 SP2 car. Handles great. Love the design. Where ever we take it, its become an eye catcher.

Per the Solstice web site this is the 3rd rarest color "Fresh". Interesting names for colors. My 924 is a factory color "Gaboon Grey". A light brown.

The Solstice just doesn't have the mystique. There's nothing special about it. Plus, no pedigree.

Honestly, the only car I can think of off the top of my head which to this day still should have collector's status is the Ferrari, and at that, not so much as it did 20 or 30 years ago.

One reason being it seems anyone with money - or w/o money but enough credit can get any car that decades ago, a person had to work their ass off to buy. Either that, or they were entitled toward buying such cars.

Why? It's a decent car, but not even a class leader. Just because they didn't build many doesn't make it a collector item.

Classic also has irony attached to it.

Why is the R5 Turbo Renault classic, ugly as some say it is? Or the Miata, underpowered and silly as it is, or the Bug - a billion served and still counting. How about the AMC Gremlin? I've hear "aficionados" assign classic status to those cars.

Could it be character of a specific type? A flaw? An attribute? All four of the above cars have some sort of character, flaw and attribute.

If the Solstice does everything well, even above a state of mediocrity, that just means it's a good car.

Like the '87 Chevy Caprice.

I've been trying to explain this to my wife for years about her obsession with Disney "collectibles". Just because it's a "limited edition" does not mean it has any intrinsic value.

I have to agree with the above - there's nothing all that special about a Solstice. If it were me I'd go after a Sky Redline, but I doubt that one will be a true "collectible" either. It wasn't out long enough to establish a reputation. Same with the Solstice.

Of course, looking at ANY car as an investment and expecting appreciation on it is incredibly foolish.

Wow, I didn't know these existed. I briefly looked at the solstice when it first came out, but I felt they were too expensive.

I would buy one of these. It's a [real] targa!!! Plus, they look a bit like a baby TVR to me. Also, I think I've heard there are V8 swaps out there?!

Targa

Have driven ours several times as a Targa. Only problem.....can't take the top with you.

The wife is looking forward to trying a few DEs with it in 2010.

Only for people under 5'11"...

The Saturn version was a GREAT looking car, but I'm yet to meet anyone over 6ft that test drove one comfortably...

A Solstice Turbo was already going to be a collectors car.

Look at your run of the mill 70s Camaro now. They used to grow on trees, but find a nice one now, and it's often worth MORE than it was when it was new.

My money says that the Solstice GXP will one day fetch over it's 2009 MSRP.
