^ I've thought about your post for a whole day.

I agree that a lot of the street people are mentally ill, that's a given. And they hoard tons of useless garbage for sure. But it might seem rational to them. The insanity is staying on the streets when every major city in the USA has shelters, free housing and healthcare for the homeless, etc. They choose to live like that. To me, that is what is most symptomatic of their illness. Another offshoot and this is where I have problems with them, is that on the streets the mentality is to "get away with" victimizing people. Their first question when they meet a person who is vulnerable and has more than them is "what can I take from this person". They can turn to violence, or theft, or aggressive behavior. That is when I kick them off my property. Just yesterday I ran a hobo off who wanted to fight with one of my nephews.

IMO, Portland was and is still a lovely city.

I just hope that the people of Portland put their collective foot down and shut down the idiots who vandalize businesses, terrorize innocent people, and make the streets unsafe for the general public.

You have to wonder why the local elected officials, law enforcement, and business leaders have not totally clamped down on the B.S.

Enough already, handle your $h1t Portland !

The mere fact that you acknowledge the psychological "take" on reality of falsely labelling yourself as a victim of others in order to go on the attack, that makes me hopeful for the Left. I'm not saying that I agree, but I do see that there is potential for eventual common ground.

I don't consider allowing thugs, arsonists, anarchists, and other assorted criminals the freedom to terrorize citizens a great place to live but more power to those who do.

sometimes the shelters are full

sometimes they don't want to follow the rules the shelters have - they want to be "free"

shelter rules include no shooting up ...

Those who are chosing to look the other way are making a big mistake. The future generations are depending on us to do something now, as in put a stop to it.

One observation: there is very little law enforcement in Portland now. As in, unless you are called in to 911 for a significant crime, or participating in a “direct action” aka riot, the odds of police taking an interest in you are very very low. This extends to driving - I see so many cars in Portland with no plates, trashed looking, or driving too fast. At least the traffic getting heavier is impeding the speeders a little. Today I was stuck in a overfilled left turn pocket at a jammed light, trying to turn left into a parking lot that was about 75’ before the intersection. This is an intersection with really long signal phases when you just sit and wait even if no cars are using the phase.. I crossed the centerline and figured on driving the wrong way in the oncoming lane for 35’ to get to the driveway. Not the best driving habit but I’m familiar with this intersection and know the maneuver works. So I’m wrong-waying and into the oncoming lane appears a cop car. We drive straight at each other and then I turn into the parking lot and he goes on his way. I had not the slightest concern that he’d pull me over. I wasn’t threatening to shoot anyone or breaking windows, so I was cool.

All 50 of Portland police’s highly trained rapid response unit voted unanimously to resign on Wednesday during a union meeting in response to the recent indictment of Officer Corey Budworth for allegedly assaulting a photographer with his baton during as an overnight riot broke out last August.

That night, according to the police union, a group of about 200 demonstrators – many equipped with tactical helmets, faces covered, and armed with a variety of weapons – descended on the Multnomah Building in southeast Portland. Multiple dumpsters were set on fire, buildings were defaced, and windows were broken. A riot soon was declared at the planned event after someone from the crowd launched a Molotov cocktail into the Multnomah Building, setting it ablaze.

"After nearly 75 consecutive nights of violence, destruction, and mayhem, a small group of RRT (Rapid Response Team) officers—including Officer Budworth—were again tasked with dealing with the riot," the Portland Police Association said. "Per PPB Command Staff orders, RRT officers cleared the rioters from the area to allow the Fire Bureau to extinguish the blaze. But the rioters were not satisfied."

According to the union, rioters re-amassed and began marching back toward the building. As the Rapid Response Team was working to clear the area, Officer Budworth "was forcefully knocked to the ground" and officers deployed pepper spray and less lethal munitions as the crowd grew more aggressive.

Several rioters interfered with an officer attempting to place one person under arrest.

"RRT officers, including Officer Budworth, used their Police Bureau-issued batons to try and stop the crowd’s criminal activity," the union’s description of events continued. "Per his training and in response to the active aggression of a rioter interfering with a lawful arrest, Officer Budworth used baton pushes to move a rioter, now known to be Teri Jacobs, out of the area."

NE 33rd between Lombard and Marine Dr?

I used to ride my bike on that road during my work commute which was 13 miles from NE Portland to Vancouver. That was a few years ago. There were RVs there at that time but there are more today. Going over the I-5 bridge, I had a couple encounters with aggressive homeless guys. Good ride for staying in shape.

The eviction moratorium ends this month. The homeless problem is going to get worse.

I hope the state can figure out how to get the rent relief distributed during the extension. There is large pot of money - like $0.6 BN - set aside to compensate landlords and thus avoid evictions. The state govt can’t seem to figure out how to get it paid out.

I know, some of those renters probably deserve to be evicted, bad decisions, etc etc. But plenty just got caught in the pandemic and then in the state’s inability to get unemployment benefits paid. I know people who lost their jobs in March and didn’t start receiving UE checks until November. The ones I know had the means to get through and keep paying their rent. Some cut it close but they made it. I posted a few months ago about our friend, the older widow, who lost her husband a couple years ago, then lost her job to the pandemic, and then had a big medical problem, we helped her out, and she recently started a new job so she’s likely made it through. Many other people won’t have.

No one seems to have a good estimate of the number for renters at risk of eviction, but it is probably around 100,000 households in Oregon, with the bulk of those in the Portland area. If 10% of those get evicted, that could double our homeless problem in Portland and environs.

Tobra 06-18-2021 02:32 PM

Most of the people refusing to go in a homeless shelter choose to do drugs rather than go in the shelter

It is truly impressive how stupid most of the stuff you post is. Hard to believe it is not on purpose

This is an unfortunate fact - government intervention ultimately loses out to free market forces again, and again until either the government breaks, or the economy breaks. And there is no better alternative, so it's not like switching to socialism will make things better. It will be much worse in terms of quality of life, investment incentives, innovation, and on and on and on.....
