^ I've thought about your post for a whole day.
I agree that a lot of the street people are mentally ill, that's a given. And they hoard tons of useless garbage for sure. But it might seem rational to them. The insanity is staying on the streets when every major city in the USA has shelters, free housing and healthcare for the homeless, etc. They choose to live like that. To me, that is what is most symptomatic of their illness. Another offshoot and this is where I have problems with them, is that on the streets the mentality is to "get away with" victimizing people. Their first question when they meet a person who is vulnerable and has more than them is "what can I take from this person". They can turn to violence, or theft, or aggressive behavior. That is when I kick them off my property. Just yesterday I ran a hobo off who wanted to fight with one of my nephews. |
IMO, Portland was and is still a lovely city.
I just hope that the people of Portland put their collective foot down and shut down the idiots who vandalize businesses, terrorize innocent people, and make the streets unsafe for the general public. You have to wonder why the local elected officials, law enforcement, and business leaders have not totally clamped down on the B.S. Enough already, handle your $h1t Portland ! |

One observation: there is very little law enforcement in Portland now. As in, unless you are called in to 911 for a significant crime, or participating in a “direct action” aka riot, the odds of police taking an interest in you are very very low. This extends to driving - I see so many cars in Portland with no plates, trashed looking, or driving too fast. At least the traffic getting heavier is impeding the speeders a little. Today I was stuck in a overfilled left turn pocket at a jammed light, trying to turn left into a parking lot that was about 75’ before the intersection. This is an intersection with really long signal phases when you just sit and wait even if no cars are using the phase.. I crossed the centerline and figured on driving the wrong way in the oncoming lane for 35’ to get to the driveway. Not the best driving habit but I’m familiar with this intersection and know the maneuver works. So I’m wrong-waying and into the oncoming lane appears a cop car. We drive straight at each other and then I turn into the parking lot and he goes on his way. I had not the slightest concern that he’d pull me over. I wasn’t threatening to shoot anyone or breaking windows, so I was cool.

I used to ride my bike on that road during my work commute which was 13 miles from NE Portland to Vancouver. That was a few years ago. There were RVs there at that time but there are more today. Going over the I-5 bridge, I had a couple encounters with aggressive homeless guys. Good ride for staying in shape. |
The eviction moratorium ends this month. The homeless problem is going to get worse.

https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2021/06/oregon-races-to-distribute-rent-assistance-as-eviction-moratorium-comes-to-an-end.html https://www.streetroots.org/news/2021/06/16/oregon-poised-eviction-crisis-when-rent-comes-due-july-1 I know, some of those renters probably deserve to be evicted, bad decisions, etc etc. But plenty just got caught in the pandemic and then in the state’s inability to get unemployment benefits paid. I know people who lost their jobs in March and didn’t start receiving UE checks until November. The ones I know had the means to get through and keep paying their rent. Some cut it close but they made it. I posted a few months ago about our friend, the older widow, who lost her husband a couple years ago, then lost her job to the pandemic, and then had a big medical problem, we helped her out, and she recently started a new job so she’s likely made it through. Many other people won’t have. No one seems to have a good estimate of the number for renters at risk of eviction, but it is probably around 100,000 households in Oregon, with the bulk of those in the Portland area. If 10% of those get evicted, that could double our homeless problem in Portland and environs. |
Most of the people refusing to go in a homeless shelter choose to do drugs rather than go in the shelter

I'm glad you had a nice day and I am glad you don't live in Tennessee. I guess we can both agree on the last statement. SmileWavy |
