As a native and a resident of a Portland suburb. This thread is incredibly ill informed.
Homeless? Hell yes. That is a problem. No question Violence? Minor. It sells news. Move on. Today? I moved my kid into Portland. In a less nice part of town. It was lovely. We could talk rust belt? I hear meth / opioid use is epidemic there? Seriously. That is all I hear about the middle of the US. Guess what? I bet I am Ill informed about that. Portland is a nice place. A bunch of goof balls moved in recently. Politicians are goofballs as well. Voters are dilusional. But it is not what you see in the news. Trust me. I live here. |

About as much as I accept what I read here. It wasn't a national MSM that did the poll so in this case yes, I accept the data.

(edit) A few homes being listed there: https://www.zillow.com/lake-oswego-or/ (edit) I am NOT knocking your personal success. More power to ya. I believe capitalism is the best system for giving the overall best standard of living. Just pointing out that where you live means you don't really have a clue what life is like for those living near the mess.

I want to be delicate here because there's no point in piling on to Portland when they're down. But the dozen or so city blocks that make up the Downtown area are not "nice". They are goofball central, which is where the charm comes from. It's an interesting place, and confusing for people who are not from there. You can park in one of the parking lots, pay the wrong place, and get a ticket in the mail. It happened to me. You can try to one of the cash ATMs and get your Identity stolen and find money missing from your account. That happened to me too. You can also buy some really neat food. You can buy a coffin full of VooDoo Doughnuts. You can also find interesting churches, pizza joints, and take in the smell of the street musicians. At least, that was how it was. Right now, I'd avoid the place. The Goofball thing sort of backfired, and now they have all of the weirdo stuff turning people off. The property damage, perception that the bad people are not being dealt with, and unsafe night environment are not "nice". I really hope they get it together, even if it means that **gasp** Porland loses some of it's weirdness. |

Scenes such as the one you posted almost certainly are condemned by every rational person. ( and even by some in this forum )Hell, the "protesters" that savaged my city torqued me off, too, but it isn't driving me away.

Hmmm, but I thought it was "mostly peaceful protests" and a "kumbaya summer of love" thing happening up there?
Sounds to me like the leadership was and still is lacking there. I have some family that live there but I haven't talked to them in quite some time because they are wacko AF so it doesn't surprise me at all that Portland is in a state of ruin. Like it or not, people need rules to keep themselves in some sort of "check". Awwww, Portland, brings to mind the song Disco Inferno. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk

Well, you live in Lake Oswego, which puts you about as close to the situation as it does people in Oswego, New York.
My brother has lived near 25th & NE Klickitat for over 30 years. This has long been a quiet, safe and lovely part of town. They now stay only because of the needs of his 90 year old MiL. Once she no longer needs their help, they're out of there ... pronto! The property of a long time friend in John's Landing have been invaded by squatters multiple times. Go have a look around: coming from LO you pass right through it on your way into Portland. Another friend who in the hills northeast of the intersection of Barbur and Hamilton has experienced similar intrusions. Personally, I've never been a fan of SE and NE Portland (certain areas notwithstanding) but examples two and three are both SW Portland, one down by the river and the other in up in the West Hills. Both of these friends are also approaching the "***** it point and are considering relocating (one to the coast, the other to G-Camp. Trust them, they really live there. _
