water conserving tips?

California is about to dry out. sad.

our county is asking for a volunteer 20% reductions...yea, sure. we know how good the USA is with the honor system. hahah.

well, i'm gonna try. I already picked up a big food container I use to collect water at the kitchen sink. typically veggie washing water, and the stuff that runs while I wait for it to warm up. then empty the tub into a couple of big buckets outside my backdoor. I am actually shocked how fast they fill up.

i'll pee in the backyard

my truck is old and nasty, so if I even wash it, i'll send it thru a carwash that advertises filtered and recycled water. whatever.

my showers are a blink. shut off water while brushing, etc. working on shortening my wifes showers, but that is..well, see my first point. I have a water saving shower head that feels like showering in fog. my yard is all drought resistant local stuff.

what else? I remember when we kept the pee in the toilet and flushed when it got really dark yellow. gross.

If you don't already have one you can convert your toilet to a dual flush for about $35. I have a dual flush toilet and like it a lot. The flush for liquids uses .6 gallons and the standard flush uses 1.6.

Refill your water bottle, and combine partials to fill up rather than tossing them into the trash. Make sure you put a lid on those big buckets outside your back door to prevent animals, or bugs from getting in, or from it evaporating in the heat.

BTW, no shame in peeing outdoors when convenient.

Bring 10 gallons of water home each time you go fishing.
I do some of my best peeing outdoors.

Not sure how effective it would be in tighter neighborhoods but they could spend some of that surplus on providing grants for retrofitting of grey water systems.

Commercial buildings would be the most efficient place to apply those grants since there’s an economy of scale.

Turn off the water while you're brushing your teeth.

Don't flush every time you pee. "Meet the Fockers" - 'If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.'

When you go fishing "accidentally" fall in while also happening to find a bar of soap in your pocket.

The key to that plan is to not visit the same lake twice in a week. Don't want people catching on or thinking you have no clue how to use a kayak.

Do you run a dehumidifier? I empty mine into my garden beds.

You guys should setup a rain water tank to collect water off the roof when it rains. I know it rains sometimes.

I wash my cars on the front lawn. For the last year or so, that's the main watering it has gotten, except when it rains, which hasn't been much this year.

You can have some of our water. Our temperature and precipitation "normals" were just increased by NOAA. Our annual rainfall just went up 4" per year. Much warmer and wetter here than it used to be. We're averaging over 50" of rain per year now.

Make a sign:

not legal in California without a permit, no seriously

They are not going to get much more benefit from conservation

Residential use is 10% of total, yet that is where conservation efforts are focused.

It makes perfect sense that California want to spend beau coup dinero on a high speed rail line rather than on desalination plants.

Pssshhtttt.

Tobra already addressed the legality.

But no, it never rains in Cali.
