I don't get it. Wouldn't a new engine have some sort of warranty from a reputable builder? I would think they'd want to see the engine in person to determine what went wrong and make it right if it was something wrong with the build.

Cars, bikes, boats. Just stuff. When any of the above get to the point where they’re in the way, no longer fun to work on or only used to charge the battery or keep entropy from taking hold...it’s time to sell.
Leave $ out of the equation (if you can). That’s the wrong reason to buy/sell toys. Get what you want, enjoy it fully, then move on. Life is short...toys don’t care about you. You won’t hurt their feelings. My thoughts.

AFAIK there is no clique for Chevy trucks, no draw to take one to a cars and coffee. No snobbery, little discussion, other than how to chase down problems and fix them (all cars have that interest somewhere on the Net). No New Years Day runs where people drive 2wice the speed limit (yes I did that too) and no string of independent shops that charge top rates to 'specialize' on the marque. No motivation to investigate high performance options and a quiet unassuming ride.
IOW, all the right reasons to own a lowly used PU instead of an overly value inflated sports car. |

I sold mine because of a long list of reasons, many have already been mentioned here. It took about a year of back and forth in my mind to step off, decide to do it and actually make it happen, but I haven't regretted the choice; It was a great chapter in my life and I have a billion pictures of the car and events where the car took center stage.

Sounds like not ONE, but TWO worst case engine scenarios. First with the 911. Now the Focus.
![]() No wonder you guys are looking for a way out. I'd step away from the cars, cool off, and perhaps sell some of them to simplify. Give it a month or two before you ditch it all. There are times I get so frustrated with stuff like that, I want to just smash a hammer through the windshield. It's crushing. I get it. Sorry to hear. EDIT-Just to share. This January, I changed the timing belt on my wife's volvo v60. Several weeks later KABLAM! Broken belt, trashed engine. Turns out an accessory belt got partially shredded, and sucked into the timing belt cover, entangling in the timing belt, jumping the timing. I couldn't even bare to look at the engine, I just handed it over to a trusted mechanic to pull the head and fix the valves. I was sick to my stomach. I needed a freakin' shrink afterwards "YOU DID NOTHING WRONG" the mechanic told me over and over, as this is a known failure on this engine. I felt like Clark Griswold trying to turn on his Christmas lights in Christmas Vacation "But I checked all the bulbs" Still so mad, shooken, I couldn't look at it. In the end, it also caused a hairline crack in a cam housing, so the engine was leaking oil. The mechanic himself had to pull the head/timing THREE times to find the microcrack that was causing it. All warranty work. Not only did I get bit, it bit him too. He sent me the piece because he was so proud he finally found the crack. It took me 15 minutes of looking with dental loupes to find it myself. I took a wad of $100 bills out of my wallet and handed them over and apologized for the headache. 5 months later, and I am still just getting the courage to even look at the car, let alone work on it. Sorry to hear about your engine troubles. That just plain sucks.
I was laid off from work back in '12. In March of that year we'd just bought a new commuter car (used) for me to use to go to work. By the end of the year I didn't need it. My wife said we had a choice to make, or rather I had a choice to make. Keep the 911 and sell the Honda or vice versa. I looked hard at how I wanted to use whichever car I kept. Gas 'n go cross country trips were high on my priority list. Doing that in a car with a warranty would be a lot less stressful. I sold the 911 and paid off the Honda. So far, so good. Three years later I was able to go back to Missouri for a good friends second wedding. Good times with a guy I've known for more than 60 yrs. Today I'm thinking about selling the Honda, just to get something that is easier to get in/out of and that my wife will actually ride in with me. Yesterday was the first time she's ridden in it in years, literally. It does ride a tad 'rough' but still gives me 27 mpg on road trips. Do I miss the 911? A tad, only because it'd be worth so damn much money now IF I'd left it stock. It was a special order car and uniquely equipped. How many Sportomatic SC's have you ever seen?

I did everything I wanted over my 20 years of owning 2 AC 911s.
So sold one on bat 2 years ago. The other AC 911 sat in my garage after receiving a full restoration. So last month when some one asked if I would sell it I said I would consider offers. A deal was made and the last 911 leaves Sunday. It was a great car 20 years ago for $20k. Now it's a collectable. I'm thrilled I got to own and drive it for 20 years before it became too expensive to risk damage from our many adventures, AX and touring with local Porsche clubs. I'm not giving up on cars, just going to spend a few more years racing my Vintage Camaros. Having worked on dedicated race cars for the last 10 years you forget what a pain it is to work on production cars. Race cars are made to work on, production cars are a pain to work on. After 5 more years of racing then maybe shut down the 8 car garage and convert it to a double air bnb lol. Sold 2 years ago. ![]() Adios Turbo Look you were an awesome experience. Last week at the dealer get the numbers matching certificate. I'm sure it will be a conflicting day watching it leave Sunday. ![]() I still enjoy both of these, maybe hang up the race cars when I turn 70. ![]() |

I wanted a simple life.
I am thinking of selling a pile of double barreled shotguns as well. all the tools the shelves full of parts, "I may need someday" was wearing on me. it was so sad to sell the 911SC but I am quite shock at how I adjusted so quickly. the catalyst was moving to a new city. I had to stay in an apartment for several months, and there simply wasn't a storage situation. it was just the motivation I needed. my stepdad passed away and dealing with his stuff was horrific. I wont leave that to anyone behind me. a PPOT member just passed away. he didn't post here much, but we became buds. his wife reached out to me to help sell his SC and his parts that "he may need someday". Taiwanese people have a saying. "a simple life is a good life".

my advice? keep the 911 - sell the other stuff. revisit thought of selling 911 in one year. - only gonna go up in value - unless you break it. : ( |

I've had my '69 911E for decades. I seems like most of that time it's been a project to work on - having been completely (well, probably 98%) disassembled and reassembled with upgraded engine, trans., brakes, suspension, interior, etc., etc. It's like a new car and on the verge of being back on the road. Now I'm actually thinking of selling it with all of the original parts, extra parts, & other things that go along with it. I'm thinking of buying an Intermeccanica replica convertible D as a replacement. I'm not interested in an authentic car but one I can drive and enjoy without worrying about because of its semi rarity and problems with replacement parts and features. Whether I'll accomplish my plan before I kick the bucket remains to be seen.

Is it going to make a positive difference in your life if you sell one or all? My guess is not. What, maybe you're going have more money in the bank?
I have some that I haven't driven in years. Does it make sense? No. Do I care. Not really. For me, just going down to wash one once in a while is a pleasure that I just don't get with washing a VW. A friend talked me out of one of my Speedsters once. Loaded it on the transport and was so bummed that I came back upstairs and immediately bought another. Driven it a couple times since. There's just something about an air cooled 911. Maybe go to a good air cooled event to get that feeling back. |

Both of my cars had issues after work on them and I feel it cost me a very good friend (my mechanic). Sometimes it just isn't worth it messing with old cars. My whiteboard on the garage has the same to do list from 3 years ago.

I think he should talk to the engine builder, sounds like something was not put together properly.

I know my story doesn't count for much because we are talking about a 996 4S but I've seriously thought more about selling mine lately. Back in May I was told a school about 30 miles from my home needed a wrestling coach or they wouldn't have a season. I had heard about the position back in the fall but never gave it any thought. Anyhow, no coach no season. With a week before season, I applied and got the job. We are currently 0-7 but just loving it. During this time, Car has really just sat. Don't even miss it. The car is more of a chore, something breaks it cost money and time. Lost a match, identify, practice and try again.
Well my point is, their is so much fun stuff out there, sometimes it just time for a change. Fishing is a good one. Buy some rubber worms and just get out there. |

Sounds to me like you guys are just in too deep. I'd simplify, but slowly, and see if you really want to eliminate. And its more fun sometimes if you don't invest so much time, but let others do the heavy lifting. I know that goes against the grain, but it frees up time and mental energy.
